My cat has diarrhea for days, losing weight. Bland diet not helping. What now?

It is a bit concerning that he's really not eating enough, and if he's had diarrhea for a few weeks, that would make him feel pretty awful and lead to a decrease in appetite. Given that the Metronidazole didn't fix the diarrhea and he's having a decrease in appetite, I think taking him into the vet again would be best. I'd have him seen today or tomorrow. If this was caused by a food change I would expect him to be back to normal by now. There may be something else underlying going on here that is the cause of Zebco's diarrhea and weight loss, such as intestinal parasites, pancreatic disease, diabetes, or even thyroid disease. I would recommend taking him to your vet for a through examination and potential tests (bloodwork, fecal exam), to hopefully identify the underlying problem so that he is treated appropriately. In the meantime I would suggest feeding Zebco a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help settle his stomach a bit. You can also try adding 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in his food daily to add fiber and help harden the stools up. Best wishes with Zebco and I hope he feels better soon.

If Kenzo is losing weight and having persistent diarrhea, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him and test his stool for intestinal parasites. If he has parasites, he will need to receive the appropriate treatment to treat this. In the meantime, I would initiate a bland diet as outlined below. Young animals should not be fasted for more than 12 hours. Fasting will allow the intestinal system to relax and minimize acid secretions that may irritate and inflame the intestinal lining. During the fast small amounts of water or ice chips may be provided. Never fast a sick animal, it may cause disease progression and death. Hi from Bangladesh! Don't worry, it may take a few more days to see improvement. You may also try a bland diet of boiled chicken, rice, and plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to help firm up the stool. Using a probiotic for cats and dogs can help as well. Hope this helps!!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry that Oscar isn't doing well. I would discuss further diagnostic testing with your veterinarian. Oscar may need fecal samples and cultures or other testing sent to an outside lab if that hasn't already been done. Some kittens benefit from prescription diets to help with diarrhea and a probiotic such as Forti Flora may help. Oscar is a cutie. I hope he is feeling better soon.
