My cat has diarrhea after starting virus medication, is it normal?

Hello and thank you very much for your question. The coccidiosis treatment that was prescribed to you is generally the most safe and affective on the market. It can be normal to have periods of explosive diarrhea or multiple defecation’s for up to seven days after the treatment starts. My advice is as follows: As long as he continues to eat normally, drink normally, play, and not vomit, I would continue with the treatment without going back to the vet. If he seems lethargic or sick or he just does not seem himself, however, I would take him back to the vet or call the vet as soon as possible to get a consultation. If you decide to keep him at home and continue the treatment, the diarrhea and related side effects of the medications should be gone by 7 to 10 days after the treatment began. diarrhea after deworming can be normal, but usually for no more than a couple days. this is probably due to something else, either a virus, bacteria or something in the food he isn't copping with. i would recommend taking him to the vet in order to get it treated.

Hi from Bangladesh! Don't worry, it may take a few more days to see improvement. You may also try a bland diet of boiled chicken, rice, and plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to help firm up the stool. Using a probiotic for cats and dogs can help as well. Hope this helps!!

Hi there, it sounds from your question like you were trying to attach a photo (?) but I'm not seeing one attached to your question. However, if Kiko is eating, active, and playful, then you should be just fine with seeing the vet tomorrow. Your vet will likely do a fecal float test to evaluate Kiko's stool for microscopic parasite eggs, and may recommend a course of dewormer either way to be safe. There are certainly other problems that can cause diarrhea, but with Kiko's age, the short duration of diarrhea, and the fact that he seems to be otherwise feeling pretty good, he will likely do great after his vet visit - I would not be too worried about it being a major problem at this stage! I don't think the diarrhea has anything to do with the upper respiratory infection. I would recommend that you call the vet. They may want to test for intestinal parasites or may be concerned about a different bacteria or virus causing the diarrhea. I wouldn't change any food right now, since a sudden change may make the diarrhea worse. If he develops vomiting, decreased appetite, or lethargy, I would definitely have him checked out by the vet.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Because this has been going on for so long, I recommend taking Nuru to a vet for a physical exam and a stool sample test. He could have microscopic parasites that need to be treated. Not all dewormer medications treat all intestinal parasites so it helps to know what he has. If that test is negative, I would recommend an infectious disease test (leukemia/FIV). If all that is normal, the vet can discuss his nutrition. Good luck and kisses to Nuru!

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Ivy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
