My cat has diarrhea for 2 days and patchy hair loss. What's wrong?

Hairloss is not a common side effect of diarrhea. In some cases, if the diarrhea is severe enough and your cat is not absorbing proper nutrients then yes, it could cause hairloss. However, it is much more likely that your cat has more than one issue going on and a trip to the veterinarian is indicated to help sort things out.

I see the little bald patch, and I wouldn't get too worried about it. Monitor it for now, and have it checked out by a vet if it gets bigger or starts to bother Joni. She should see a vet for the diarrhea since it's been going on for longer than 24 hours.

Diarrhea is a common problem with cats and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). Usually it's not serious, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If she has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can help her get through this by feeding bland food (i.e. boneless cooked chicken). Feed small portions (1/4 cup or less) at meal time. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. Kitty should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. He could have hyperthyroidism and your vet can run blood-work to test his thyroid level. Once your vet determines the exact cause, he/she can recommend a treatment. Hope he feels better soon.

It sounds however like she might have something else going on, and dragging her bum on the ground suggests that she is itchy. I would start by deworming her, as she likely has worms. Also, make sure she is on a high-quality kitten food. If she stops eating, or becomes weak and not moving, then please have her seen by a vet right away. Best of luck with Lola.

Diarrhea and a decrease in appetite could be a sign of a number of different problems. Intestinal parasites are possible, even for indoor cats, as are some infections or diseases like colitis or inflammatory bowel disease. If the diarrhea continues for more than 24 hours or seems to be getting worse, or if her appetite does not improve during that time I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian. They may treat her symptoms or recommend some testing like blood work or a fecal analysis depending on what they find during a physical examination.

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! Based on these symptoms, I would recommend having Spot examined by a veterinarian for further testing and treatment recommendations. It is possible that he is dealing with some type of systemic infection, intestinal parasite, etc. I would recommend having him examined by a vet, have his blood tested and his feces tested as an initial workup.
