My stray kitten has crusty ears and bald spots. What's wrong?

This looks like mange but it could also be ringworm or a bacterial skin infection. If she is handleable I suggest you get her to a vet for an exam. There are many low cost clinics in your area including the Humane Society. It would be great if she could be spayed and vaccinated too even if you plan on just putting her back outside.

A lesion like that could be a bacterial infection or ringworm (which humans can get). Your best option is to have Mocha examined and tested for ringworm. Make sure to protect the area from rubbing and scratching and she should wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Congratulations on adding Tiger to your family! There is a chance that its bacterial but I would be most concerned thats ringworm (which you can get from him!). I would recommend to take him into the vet for fungal testing and medications to start treatment just in case (while you are waiting on the results). I would also recommend to start him on a flea treatment such as Revolution as this will provide longer protection than a bath! Please let me know if you have any further questions!

This is very suspicious of ringworm (a fungal infection of the skin). This could also be due to a yeast or bacteria infection, but it's much more likely to be ringworm. . It's best to get it diagnosed by a veterinarian, because ringworm can spread to different parts of the body and can spread to other animals and people. Also, the more involved the infection, the longer it will take to clear. Ace will need prescription antifungal medication in order to clear this and will also need medicated baths. For now, I recommend separating Ace from your other animals and washing your hands anytime you touch him. Your veterinarian will be able to get you some more info at the time of exam. Lucky is such a cutie! The open sores could be due from scratching from the fleas as well as scratching at his ears. The ear discharge indicates an ear infection, which can be caused by ear mites, bacteria, or yeast. Keep in mind as well that flea shampoo will not prevent the fleas, and he needs to be a flea prevention program to keep him from getting fleas again. I would have Lucky seen by a vet today. The sores may be infected from the scratching, he needs the cause of his ear discharge diagnosed and treated, and the vet can start him on a flea prevention program. He will also need vaccines. Please bring him into a vet today, it's important to have any ear problem examined and treated promptly because leaving it untreated can lead to hearing loss.

Poor kittens! These lesions could be a result of injuries from playing and subsequent infection/abscess formation, ringworm, or mange. If you feel adventurous, you can carefully try to use clippers to clip the fur around these lesions on both kittens and then clean the areas with an antiseptic solution, such as dilute chlorhexidine or dilute betadine. However, both kittens will likely need to go to the vet for further evaluation to determine if diagnostic testing and/or oral antibiotics are necessary. If the kittens are scratching at themselves, be sure that they are wearing e-collars (cones) to prevent further skin damage. I hope that all goes well!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The pictures are good but it's still tough to see what is going on. Hair loss with dry/flaky skin is often indicative of ringworm especially in kittens. This is highly contagious to other animals and to people making it a zoonotic disease. I would definitely have a vet evaluate the litter and start treatment for a fungal infection right away to prevent this from getting worse. I would quarantine the litter away from all other pets and humans especially young children and the elderly since they are most likely to get infected. Even the shed hairs can contain fungal spores so direct contact with the animals is not required to get infected. It could be something else but in the pictures it is highly suspect since it looks like the paws and tail are affected. Other possibilities include mites, bacteria, external parasites (fleas, etc), dietary problems, intestinal parasite problems, among other things. Your vet can evaluate them and advise a woods lamp exam, skin scrape, fungal culture, hair analysis, etc to determine what is going on. The ears could be infected with ear mites and they could evaluate those also. Eye problems in young kittens are often due to viruses which infect the eyes and cause upper respiratory infections. These are contagious also along with the ear mites to other cats and dogs. Your vet can evaluate everything that is going on a make a plan to solve the puzzle. They can advise a sound treatment plan in addition to guiding you in preventive health care items including deworming, vaccines, flea/tick products, etc. Good luck and I hope it's not ringworm.
