My cat is coughing after a food switch. What can I do at home?

Hello, sorry to hear about your kittens. Allergies in your cat can be managed with medications and environmental modifications. Do not use any aerosolized sprays, candles, or fragrances because this can exacerbate the coughing. Clean often to limit the amount of dust around the house. Sometimes you may have to use litter that clumps and has less sand in it. Dry food may need to be moistened with water so that the food dust does not cause irritation. I suspect she may be allergic to something in your new apartment. It could be allergy to plants or pollen but some allergies in cats are triggered by floor cleaners, dust, new carpets etc. Also, coughing in cats is often a sign of asthma, so maybe Mia has mild asthma ? Sometimes this kind of allergies or mild asthmatic attacks are very difficult to diagnose. The common way to go to in such cases is prescribing anti-allergic / anti-asthmatic treatment for 1-2 weeks. I would suggest you to discuss that with your vets.

Parasites can cause coughing in some cases, so it may be worth getting a broad spectrum dewormer and treating Jarbou. Other causes for coughing can be viral infection (feline upper respiratory complex), bacterial infection, foreign body or asthama/allergies/bronchitis. There really is no good way to know the difference without a vet exam and probably x-rays. Keep watch on his overall health and make sure that he continues to thrive, is on a good quality diet and deworming is a good start. Poor kitty. Coughing in cats can be caused by many things unfortunately, including: underlying heart disease, asthma (if wheezing also present), fungal infection, lung worms, etc. We need more information in order to narrow things down. I would suggest taking Mac in to your vet, especially since this cough has been persistent for more than a day or two. The vet will likely want to start off with a radiograph and bloodwork to hopefully diagnose the problem so that we know what Mac needs for treatment. He may be eating too fast. My cat does this sometimes. Try feeding small amounts during the day or you can use a slow feed bowl which makes it harder to gobble the food. A canned diet is perfectly fine to feed Cameo. If she stops eating completely for more than 2 days, she should be physically examined by your veterinarian. The cough can have multiple causes including allergies, infection (bacterial, fungal or viral), parasites, asthma or even heart disease. Ideally, she should be seen by your veterinarian to diagnose the underlying cause. If this is not possible and she is behaving normally otherwise, then monitor for a worsening cough, lethargy, difficulty breathing or exercise intolerance. These are symptoms that will need to be addressed by your veterinarian.

I am sorry to hear that! Coughing in a cat is concerning. It may be allergies as you mentioned, although I also worry about heart disease, asthma, and heartworms in a coughing cat. Since they all have different treatments I would recommend having an x-ray +/- bloodwork done first to see how to tailor Fifi's therapy!
