My cat has a cold. Can it give my rabbit a respiratory infection?

If your cat's respiratory signs are due to a virus, these are species-specific and not contagious to rabbits. However, if the respiratory issues are related to Mycoplasma or Chlamydia, these infections are contagious to rabbits. If testing has not been done on your cat to identify the precise cause of the respiratory signs, it would be best to keep your cat and rabbit separated until the respiratory signs have resolved. Hello, I am very sorry to hear about your rabbit. Rabbits are predisposed to bacterial upper respiratory infections. One of the more common causes is a bacteria called Pasturella, leading to an infection called "Snuffles". If left untreated this bacteria can lead to pneumonia. Rabbits are very sensitive animals and when they become ill they are often predisposed to developing GI problems such as GI stasis. To prevent secondary problems from developing I would recommend having your rabbit evaluated by a veterinarian so that they can perform an examination and evaluate the nasal discharge. It's much more likely to be an upper respiratory infection also known as snuffles, it's very common in rabbits and will require antibiotic treatment. i recommend taking Hestia to the vet ASAP in order to get it treated.

It is very unlikely that your nurse kitty Prof. Hopkins was infected by you. Sneezing can be caused by dry air, dust or a viral infection/bacterial infection. I suggest you watch your kitty for a purulent (yellow or green) nasal discharge. If there is a purulent discharge, then your cat does have a bacterial upper respiratory infection and he will need antibiotics from your vet. I hope you feel better soon (and I hope you were seen by your GP, as there is a very nasty flu epidemic in the UK)

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Respiratory infections can be either viral, bacterial or a bacterial infection secondary to a viral infection. If you have a large number of rabbits that are all inbreeding, they will have weaker immune systems and will pass these viruses around, which will lead to a group of very weak and sick bunnies. They get it by being around one another and breathing in the same air. Viruses are floating around in the environment, so unless you had each bunny individually housed, with different air venting to each one (like a research lab) then your bunnies will all be exposed. Bacteria spreads similarly. Signs of respiratory disease/infections include trouble breathing, inappetance, weight loss, decreased energy, poor hair coat, and death. You can prevent it by cleaning out your house, getting well and genetic diverse bunnies that are not allowed to inbreed (making sure they are spayed/neutered), and having the bunnies all vaccinated. Keeping the environment clean is very important as well. Best of luck with your bunnies.

I am sorry to hear about your bunny! There are many possible causes for sneezing in rabbits. We can see infections with bacteria cause sneezing in bunnies. Since only one bunny is affected the infectious cause is less likely. Irritation to the nasal passages due to things like odors/ammonia from urine in the cage or cedar shavings can occur. Foreign objects being inhaled (such as pieces of hay or shavings) can cause sneezing fits. Dental problems can also cause sneezing. Since some of these problems due require medical treatment I would recommend an examination by a vet who sees rabbits. In the meantime you can try putting a humidifier in your bunny's room if you have one and you may also bring your bunny into the bathroom while you run a steamy shower for a steam treatment for 10-15 minutes to moisten the respiratory passages.

Theoretically, yes - this is possible. Rabbits are very common carriers of Bordetella, which can cause upper respiratory infections in dogs. It isn't known how often this actually happens, but it's certainly possible that it could, especially if the rabbit and dog were in close contact.
