What causes a cat's eye to suddenly become cloudy and painful?

Common causes of cloudy eyes include corneal ulcer/abrasion, dry eye, conjunctivitis, viral infection, glaucoma, uveitis, among a few others. Common causes for increased third eyelid exposure include allergies, dehydration, eye pain or light sensitivity. If this is a sudden change, I recommend that Marshmallow be evaluated as soon as possible as a few of these eye issues can get drastically worse very quickly. It is also likely that Marshmallow is very uncomfortable and could benefit from appropriate eye medications or pain medications.

I see what you are seeing from the pictures. The pupil is just an opening in the iris (colored part) and what sits inside the eye (behind the pupil, what you see though the pupil) are the lens and the contents of the back of the eye (fundus including retina, etc.). A cloudiness to the eye can occur due to inflammation (uveitis), lens related changes (nuclear sclerosis or cataracts), or sometimes due to cellular infiltrate in the eye. It is good that there are no vision changes and that the eye is comfortable. A cause for this haze should be able to be readily identified by an eye exam by your vet. Hello, my name is Dr. Shines and I am concerned about Jerry's eye. That cloudiness could indicate a corneal scratch or uveitis. Both of those conditions should be examined quickly to prevent them from getting worse. I recommend to call around and look for another clinic. If you can't find one, then I recommend to go to an emergency clinic. In a pinch some of the walk in vaccine clinics might be able to help if they have access to eye medications and testing strips for corneal ulcers. Tractor Supply might be an option as they host walk in clinics. They use a company called PetVet and I recommend to look on the website for more information. You will see a high variability in the vaccine clinics ability to handle any type of illness so you'll need to check ahead. At home, Jerry should wear an elizabethan collar at all times to prevent scratching or rubbing at the eye which will make it worse. Keep the eye clean from discharge with a warm, damp cotton ball.
