My cat has flaky, red, puffy growth around his claw. What is it?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 12 lbs

Hi my 1 year old male cat has some flaky or scabby kind of growth around where his claw comes out and it looks a little red and a little puffy. I’m wondering what it could be, I have attached photos that hopefully will help.

Try to wash off the area and see if it’s something like cat litter glued around the base of the nail. Moist cat litter can get gummy. If it doesn’t wash off, it’s possible there’s a bacterial infection or ringworm (which humans can get) around the nail bed and I recommend to have Stewie examined by his veterinarian. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
