What cisapride dose for my cat with chronic constipation & megacolon?

Ranitidine and Erythromycin have known intestinal prokinetic effects and will help with increasing gut motility. I prefer Cisapride over all other prokinetic drugs but these other 2 are a good source in the absence of Cisapride. There are no known contraindications with using mirtazapine and cisapride together but remember, all cats react differently to medications so if you notice any abnormal issues then stop the medications immediately and call your vet. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Galaxy! I recommend cisapride, lactulose and Royal canine fiber response for constipated cats. Sometimes with the prescription diet it eliminates the need for most medications. If she isn't eating I would have her seen today and deobstipated (sedate and remove all feces) before the weekend. Then get the cisaride and food started. Sometimes refractory cases need partial removal of their colons. I wish you the best!

Stick with the dose that your veterinarian recommends. Constipation can kill. The type of diarrhea he gets from lactulose likely will not impair him. Do not feed him dry food, but stick to good quality tinned cat food, or low residue tinned cat food. You can ask your vet if you can reduce the amount of the individual dose, however, please do not do this on your own without consulting with your vet. Unfortunately the broken pelvis has possibly caused the passage through the pelvis to get smaller and the constipation may have expanded the colon before the pelvis so that feces collect there and do not fit through the pelvical opening. So it is much better if the feces are soft, or even fairly liquid provided that is caused by the lactulose.

Poor Angel! This can be such a problem in older cats. You can add in some canned pumpkin (1 teaspoon a day) to help increase her fiber intake. Also, if you haven't already, I would talk to your vet about doing some abdominal x-rays. These will help the vet see how large the colon is and how much stool is present. Cats can get something called megacolon where the muscles in their colon don't work well and they get easily constipated. These cats usually need to be sedated and manually have some of the stool removed and then put on a drug called cisapride. Some cats will have to stay on this drug long term, but I have personally had good success with putting them on a food called Royal Canin GI Fiber Response and eventually getting them off cisapride and stool softeners. It is a prescription food so I would talk to your vet about it. Also, . Every cat is different and your vet will need to help guide you through this process. If your vet doesn't think she has megacolon then cisapride may not be needed but if she is REALLY backed up then she may still need to be sedated and have some feces removed to help her out. Since constipation issues are directed at increasing water content and fiber, I would recommend sticking with the canned Purina urinary food and then adding in fiber daily with 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin or Metamucil. Also have him checked with your vet if there is ever a time he can't go at all because he may have a condition called megacolon (enlarged colon) which would require medicaiton to treat. If he is a medium-sized cat, he can likely get 2 mL by mouth twice daily until his stools are softer. If he does not defecate for longer than 48 hours, he should be seen by a veterinarian right away. Constipation can progress to obstipation, meaning a cat is completely unable to pass the feces. This can lead to rupture of the colon and/or irreversible problems with the colon.
