My cat's chin burst, leaking blood and pus. Is it serious?

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Poor little guy, he’s adorable! This looks like a deep skin scrape or abscess that is starting to heal. I would clean it with hydrogen peroxide and then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. This should heal in a week or two. If it isn’t healing or Romeo stops eating then I would bring him in for an exam. He could develop an infection that may need antibiotics to resolve. This is likely to be an abscess that bursts open. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching (if any). If not resolving in 4 days a check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. This is an abscess and the white substance is puss. These are often caused by something under the skin that gets infected. It could be a thorn or from a bite. It's best if a vet examines this and explores the wound, because if the cause of the infection is not removed, then the infection will never clear. Sometimes these infections have potential to cause infections elsewhere, or can get worse, so a vet may need to prescribe medication to prevent this. Poor Dory! You have done the right thing by putting a cone on her so she can't scratch it. This could be an abscess, a cyst, or it could be caused by a dental problem. I would have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning for it. Both an abscess and a cyst would need to be drained sterilely and an abscess will require antibiotics to treat the infection. The vet can determine what is causing this lump and can discuss treatment options with you.

If Felix got out, he may have gotten into a fight with another cat, gotten bitten, and it turned into an abscess. It sounds like the abscess has burst, but if it's painful, he does need to see a vet. I would take him into one first thing in the morning.
