Why is my cat chewing furniture, cardboard, and drooling a lot?

Hi. It sounds like Oliver has some severe dental disease. He most likely has gingivitis and possibly a painful, loose, or resorptive lesions on some teeth. Dental disease in cats can cause pain and discomfort.  This could impact quality of life. In some cases, the dental disease can cause a cat to stop eating. For dental disease, besides brushing teeth with pet toothpaste daily,  your veterinarian will recommend removing plaque and mineral buildup by scaling and polishing the teeth. Teeth will try to be saved wherever possible. In extreme cases, extraction of teeth might be needed.  Unfortunately a veterinarian will need to be involved. This could be a normal behavior for Cleo. You can start disciplining her for this behavior. If you catch her in the act you can spray her with a little water bottle and tell her “no”. Also if she has anything particular she wants to chew up, I would try to keep those objects out of site. If you worry about her being stressed, you can try to add feliway didfusers throughout the house. Feliway is a cat pheromone that helps to calm cats but doesn’t work on everyone. Also, make sure she has plenty of cat toys to play with and make sure she is getting enough attention. Sometimes they do this if they are bored. I suggest taking your cat to your veterinarian or a 24-hour emergency clinic as soon as possible. Excessive drooling in a cat can be a sign of a number of problems including (but not limited to) nausea, dental disease. Ingestion of a toxin, foreign object caught in the mouth, salivary gland disease, ulcers in the mouth, cancer of the mouth, neurological disorders, or eating something that tastes very bad. Excessive drooling is also a symptom of rabies. Many cats will chatter their teeth while watching birds or other prey animals; however, chattering could alos be an indication of pain or neurological in nature.

Typically excess salivation is either caused by nausea or pain (oral or abdominal), although this is not an all inclusive list. There can still be oral disease present, especially if these missing teeth were not removed but fell out. Cats can get resorptive lesions of their teeth which can be really painful and the changes can be hard for owners to detect. They can also get lesions in their mouth (stomatitis, a mass, ulcers, etc.) that an owner may not see. Additionally diseases of other body systems may cause drooling (kidneys, gi, etc ). I would recommend your kitty seeing a vet for a thourough oral exam and blood work to start. A good oral exam will likely require sedation and perhaps dental xrays. Hi there. I am so sorry to hear about Habla's drooling issue. When any animal is drooling in an area where rabies is a possibility, I always check to make sure the animal is vaccinated against rabies, and doesn't have any potential rabies exposure, like going outside all the time where there are stray or wild animals around. This is the most important thing to touch on first, since rabies is transmissible to humans, and can be fatal. If Hebla doesn't have any possible exposure, and is also vaccinated, then let's move along to the first two things that come to mind when cats are drooling. I usually find that there are either dental issues - diseased or fractured teeth, or nausea - from eating something out of the ordinary, or from infection or metabolic disease. I think it would be best to have Hebla seen by her veterinarian as soon as you can. They can make sure she isn't eating something caustic that can bother her mouth, make sure she doesn't have an infection of some kind, and that she is healthy otherwise. The vet can also check her teeth and make sure she doesn't have any fractured teeth or dental disease. Some cats, even young ones, can develop dental conditions that can cause chronic mouth pain and drooling. I hope you find this answer helpful. Best of luck!

If he will allow, check in and around his mouth for signs of infection or injury. This may include redness, swelling, bruising, bleeding or discharge. Make sure he has plenty of fresh water available at all times and review his diet to confirm adequate nutrition. A pheromone product, such as Feliway spray or plug in diffuser, may decrease any anxiety. If the behavior persists or worsens, have him physically examined by your veterinarian. If it is behavioral, a combination of medication and behavioral modification may help. If there is a medical cause, your vet can diagnose and treat it.
