My cat has a cheek wound that's swollen and red. Is it infected?

Poor Stella. I'm concerned that the wound is red and swollen, which can indicate infection. For now, keep an eye on it and take her into the vet on Tuesday to have it treated. If you see pus, then it is definitely infected and try to get her into the vet sooner. I would just keep it clean, do not put anything on it at the moment. I hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for posting. From the pictures, the area looks red and infected. I would advise Khora be taken to a veterinarian so they can clean the wound thoroughly and give Khora a course of antibiotics. In the mean time, you can keep the area clean with a mild cleansing cloth or 3% hydrogen peroxide a few times daily, but I would highly recommend seeing a veterinarian. Oh my. This sounds like your poor Thor may have been bitten by something in the face and is in need of immediate medical attention. Most cats will still eat even when they are a little bit ill, so when a cat decides not to eat we know they are in trouble. I would highly recommend taking Thor into your local ER vet right away for care. If you can't make it in tonight then it's best to have him seen in the morning for testing and treatment depending on what the underlying cause is. Poor guy. There are a lot of wildlife critters and probably a fair number of strays out and about, depending on your neighborhood. The swollen not to the touch area is likely an abscess (infected pocket caused by a puncture wound). You will need to see a vet to have this abscess drained and then have him placed on a short course of antibiotics to help this heal properly. I would consider keeping him indoors more often and fixed if he isn’t already, because intact males typically get into more fights and sustain more injuries. Best of luck with your cat. Take care.

That appears to be infected. I recommend to have Noelle examined by the veterinarian. Infections can spread to the blood stream and it sounds like she is in pain as well. she will likely need the hair clipped away, the area cleaned, an antibiotic, a pain medication and an elizabethan collar to protect the area from further wounds. Try to have her examined within the next 24 hours. I hope she starts feeling better quickly!

I am sorry to hear about Clover. It definitely sounds like he needs to go to the veterinarian for this issue, especially since the swelling is worsening. We would worry about things like abscesses due to a wound, infected/abscessed tooth roots, and more. The vet will examine Clover and depending on their findings may recommend additional testing or treatment.

Surgery may be needed to clean the edges and see if the wound can be repaired. Often times, this does require some times for the tissue to declare itself before this is done to see what tissue will be healthy to save. All you can do until it is ready for surgery is keep it clean and stay on antibiotics to prevent an infection. Rechecks should be frequent to determine when surgery would be best. Cats are the best at healing and granulating in new tissue as long as the infection stays under control.
