My cat has a cheek lump after vet visit. Is the vet's advice right?

Hi. Yes, this could be an access. I can't say that for sure, but if the bacteria are resistant to the medications prescribed, an abscess can still form. I recommend getting her rechecked so you can find out what that lump is.

In a young kitten, a lump like this is likely a benign tumor, a cyst, or an abscess. If Mocha has his vaccines given in that area, it could be a localized reaction to the vaccine. It's good to have it checked out by a vet, but it's certainly not an emergency as long as everything else is normal (eating, drinking, behavior, litter box behavior). I would have him checked out by a vet sometime over the next week. I hope this helps!

An itchy lump on the neck could be due to an infection in the skin. They can get abscesses if something gets stuck in the skin, or he get bitten. It could also be a type of tumor. Mast cell tumors can be itchy, but are not as commonly seen with cats. Other causes of lumps in the neck could be an enlarged lymph node, enlarged thyroid gland and different types of cysts. However, none of these causes tend to be itchy. It's best if you have a vet examine him to ensure he does not have signs of the more serious causes. Usually we can find out the cause of these lumps on exam with minimal testing. It will be well worth getting it diagnosed sooner rather than later. It's not an emergency, but would be best to have her seen within the next week. I hope that helps and Skippy gets better soon.

I can understand being worried about TJ! I can see the lump from the picture you provided, and I have a few ideas as to what it may be. I see that he's not neutered, and intact males will frequently fight with other males for territory and females. If he's allowed outside, he could have gotten into a fight with another male, and developed an abscess from a cat bite. A cat's mouth has a lot of nasty bacteria in it, and abscesses are a common sequela to a cat bite. Abscesses are painful, so that may be why he's having trouble jumping on the bed. He could also have a cyst. Given that this lump is getting larger and he's having trouble getting onto your bed, I feel a vet visit in the morning is in order. The vet can diagnose what is causing the lump and how best to treat it. If he does have an abscess, it will need to be drained and flushed, and he will need antibiotics to treat the infection. Most likely Charlotte has an abscess on her cheek which is a pocket of puss under the skin. This is most commonly due to a scratch from another cat. You can apply a hot compress to the area to bring in the blood supply to help heal the area. If there is a scab try to remove it so the infection can drain. once the puss is draining continue cleaning the area and try to massage it to remove all the puss. If it won't drain you will need to bring her to your veterinarian to have it cleaned, drained and to get antibiotics for Charlotte to treat the infection.
