Why did my cat's bronchitis symptoms return after antibiotics?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Egyptian Mau | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 11 months old | 10 lbs

My cat (female, 4 yrs) was suspected to have bronchitis, she has rapid breathing (~60bpm), a fever, lethargy that all started after she cane down with a flu or cold. Vet prescribed clavamox, I administered the full dose over 7 days, initially she showed significant improvement, breathing slowed to 43bpm, lots more energy, now (its been a week since the antibiotic course has finished) all her symptoms are back in full force. Do you think the strain was resistant to penicillins?

The fact that she responded indicates it was at least in part sensitive to the treatment. It is possible that there was a mixed infection with other viruses especially herpes or inflammation which has not been controlled. Further investigation and testing would be recommended in order to determine all of the factors involved
