My cat has a broken tooth. Is dental work always this expensive?

Prices vary in different geographical locations and also by individual clinic so it’s impossible to know how much it may cost for her. The scaling and polishing portion of the dental is the least time consuming, and most inexpensive portion of the $1000 estimate. In addition, tartar left on teeth can further aggravate gum disease. The necessary extractions cannot be done without anesthesia or pre-anesthetic bloodwork to make sure that Baxter’s liver/kidney function appears normal enough to handle anesthesia. With severe gum recession/fractured teeth, cats can develop serious tooth root abscesses and oral pain resulting in weight loss, poor health. If there are in fact diseased teeth in Baxter’s mouth, having a complete dental scaling/polishing with necessary extractions will likely significantly improve his quality of life and decrease the chances of oral bacteria causing heart valve issues in the future. This can be caused by build up of plaque and bacteria, which can be removed by dental cleaning. I recommend feeding Simba hard food, brushing his teeth gently if he allows, and giving him dental treats for cats to prevent him from needing frequent cleanings in the future. $273 is a very fair price for the cleaning if it includes the anesthesia. For reference, in my practice in New York, a dental cleaning typically costs about $600.

I am sorry to hear that Charlie Brown is having problems with his teeth! Unfortunately we cannot give you the cost of this procedure as it will vary based on the region of the country where you live and the individual hospital where you have the procedure performed. It will also depend on things such as if you have bloodwork done to ensure Charlie Brown has normal liver/kidney function, how difficult the extraction of the tooth will be, and if he will need medication to go home. I would recommend bringing him to a full service vet and they can make an estimate for you based on his examination.

You shouldn't be too worried, from my experience it's rare that a cat this age would need a full dental work as such at this age, it the tooth does not seem to be decaying and if he has no trouble eating, i would leave it as it is for the time being.

So sorry that your cat is having this problem. You could take him to a veterinary dental specialist and see if the specialist will remove his tooth. Or find another vet in your area and take him for a second opinion. If his blood work is normal and he is in otherwise good health, then the risk of extracting a bad tooth is low. Hello. At some point in time, Picole could still develop an abscess that could travel down into her jaw. The recommendation of all veterinary dental specialists is to either have the tooth removed or perform a root canal, even on an older fractured tooth.
