Cat has bloody, mushy stool and painful rectum. Is it worms?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The photo is very helpful- I can definitely see the blood and mucus in the stool. Certain liver and pancreatic conditions can cause this, as well as intestinal inflammation. Additional tests I recommend are pancreatic and liver function tests, bloodwork to determine nutrient absorption by the intestines, x-rays, and even an ultrasound. The most aggressive diagnostic would be an exploratory surgery with biopsies. You can talk to your vet also about changing your cat’s diet and adding probiotics. I am sorry to hear about your kitty! With blood present I think it is time for a vet exam (and bring a stool sample along). We can have intestinal parasites that are not treated by dewormer (such as Coccidia and Giardia). We can also have things like colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, or food allergy cause these issues. The vet can examine your kitty and based on the exam and history make recommendations and possible test and treatment options.

I'm sorry Apple isn't doing well at the moment! There are a number of other causes of blood in the stool such as a bacterial infection, viral infection, a foreign body, eating something rotten, giardia, coccidia, or damage to the GI tract among other causes. I'm not sure if the vet did a fecal float to check to check for parasites, but giardia cysts are often not detected with this test because of their small size, and will often require a special zinc sulfate flotation solution for detection. You can ask your vet if they have done this test to check for giardia as a possible cause of her bloody stool. Further tests may be needed as well such as blood work, a urinalysis, x-ray of her abdomen, or an ultrasound of her abdomen. I would speak to your vet to see if one of these tests could be done to help diagnose the cause of her symptoms so she can be treated. I hope this helps, best of luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the worms you are seeing are small pieces of rice then they are likely tape worms. You need to purchase a dewormer than gets tape worms (drontal, droncit, cestex) and check her for fleas. Fleas are the intermediate host for tape worm. Also be sure that when you dewormed her before than you repeated the first dose 3-4 weeks later. There are some SPCAs that have low cost veterinary clinics. If the blood persists in her stool I recommend you have her seen. Blood indicates inflammation of the colon. Stop the diatomaceous earth. I hope this helps and good luck!

Get a fecal sample and send it away for analysis (worms, protozoa, bacteria, etc.) 2. Abdominal ultrasound 3. Trial with hypoallergenic diet 4. Checking B12 levels 4. GI endoscope and samples Often chronic GI issues in cats can be hard to diagnose the exact cause, as it is often a combination of factors, however start at the top of the list and go down, and see if you can get an answer. I would recommend that Pussy be checked out by a vet as soon as possible. Her symptoms could be caused by intestinal parasites (worms, coccidia, giardia), bacterial or viral infection (panleukopenia), IBD, intestinal lymphoma, food allergies, among a few others. From the picture, I am also concerned that she may have a prolapsed rectum. This can occur with straining during diarrhea. Sometimes this prolapse will require surgery to put it back in place and allow it the chance to heal. A vet may recommend intestinal parasite screening or viral testing to determine the cause of her illness and prescribe appropriate treatment. There are many things that could cause his symptoms. Unfortunately they are non-specific and could be a symptoms of almost anything. Bleeding from the anus frequently signifies a serious disorder. Possible causes of bleeding from the anus can include polyps or tumors of the colon or anus, abscess or infection of the anal gland, constipation, blood clotting disorders, autoimmune disease or even certain types of poisoning. Any chance he ate a toxic plant or was exposed to any toxins? Intestinal parasites are another possibility. Whipworms are intestinal parasites. They are about 1/4-inch long and live in the cecum and colon of the cat, where they cause severe irritation to the lining of those organs. This results in watery, bloody diarrhea. They can also have weight loss and general debilitation. Whipworms are one of the most pathogenic (harmful) worms found in cats. Has a fecal sample been tested? Whipworms can also cause vomiting.
