My cat has a bleeding split nail. Is it infected and needs a vet?

my cat has a split nail and it was bleeding a little bit. not sure if I need to take him in or do something ?

Poor guy. THis nail looks to be infected. I would take him in for your vet to have a close look at this. He may need to be on a short course of antibiotics if they confirm an infection is present at the nail base.
You can try cleaning it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water in the meantime, until you can get him in. This will at least help antiseptically cleanse the area and also can help with any inflammation.

I am sorry to hear about your kitty. It is difficult to see exactly what is going on in this photo, but split toenails can be painful for sure! Most often we try to cut the nail back as far as possible. In some cases we may need to sedate a pet to remove the portion that is torn, in other instances if it is only loosely attached we can remove it with a firm tug of hemostats. In some cases we may need to prescribe pain medication and we need to monitor the nail closely for infection such as swelling of the nail bed, redness of the toe, yellow or green discharge from the nail. If the nail is painful and you aren't able to remove the split portion, a trip to your vet's office is recommended. Best of luck with Archimedes!

Hello!

Most toenail injuries will be fine to wait a day to be taken to the vet. If you'd like to resubmit your question with a close up, in focus photo of the wound, I'll be able to better assess it though to be sure! :)

When cleaning it for now, just use warm water or saline as it will be the least painful for him.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics are needed to solve the problem, but disinfection can be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (twice daily for 4-5 days). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking.

This rarely get infected if disinfected properly, but a check up would be ideal just to cut off the remaining part of the nail. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (at least twice daily for the next 3-4 days. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. What should I do if my cat's nail looks bloody or is bleeding?

Some cats will get this around their nail bed. It's a buildup of skin cells, dust and dirt. If he will let you, you can clean the nail by soaking his foot in warm water and using a soft brush to remove the gunk. If the nail bed is reddened and inflamed, it's a good idea to get him seen by your vet as he may need antibiotics to help him clear it up.

My cat's claw is bent, split, and bloody, but he acts normal. What now?

It does look like there is a bit of infection in the area which needs to be treated. You could bathe Rocky's foot in lukewarm salty water and then dry it up afterwards. You boil a couple of mugs of water and then add 2 tablespoons of salt, stir it and then leave it to cool down, once lukewarm bathe the paw. You can do this twice a day and it should help with the infection, however it is likely that Rocky needs to claw to be pulled out and the area cleaned at the vets with antibiotics administration.

It looks like your cat’s toenail has been sheared off, probably from an injury, fight or being hit by a car. My best recommendation is to take your car to the vet where they will be able to fully clean the area around the nail, trim the nails if necessary, and give your cat an antibiotic and pain medication if needed.
