My cat has a black spot on its tooth. Is it tartar or something else?

Yes, this is indeed tartar. Unfortunately, brushing will not remove that. This tartar would have to removed under anesthesia. Looking at the other teeth you are doing a great job brushing, but the tartar on the molars (as in your cat) cannot always be avoided as it is in the region of salivary glands, which in some cats increases tartar build up.

It may be a resorptive lesion on the tooth. This is an indicator of dental disease. They can be painful, so a visit to your veterinarian would be recommended. The gum around that tooth looks a bit red and swollen, so I'm concerned it could be a problem with her tooth. Cats do get holes in their teeth, but they are generally the same color as the tooth and are the result of tooth resorption rather than decay as you would see with a cavity. That sounds and looks like like potential gum disease and tartar/plaque build up on the teeth. Often when it's to this point, a dental cleaning is needed to remove the build up and make sure the teeth are healthy. I would have Ghost examined by your vet and get him scheduled for a dental.

Theo could have dental calculus/tartar or even a fracture of his enamel under the green area. I would have him checked out by your veterinarian and discuss if a dental cleaning is needed before this becomes any worse.

Gingivitis presents as redness and swelling of the gums. The black line you see may be tartar on the tooth itself or, if on the gum, natural pigmentation.
