Cat biting fur off, causing sores. Is it stress or allergies?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lilly! I would have Lilly rechecked. At a bare minimum she needs medications (prednisolone taper) to relieve the itching. I would request that a skin scrape be performed to rule out skin mites. They are microscopic and need to be looked at under a microscope. I would also culture the area for ringworm. She may have allergies and I would suggest trying to change her diet first. Chicken is the number one allergic protein so try to change her to all venison or salmon diet. You will need to give the diet 2-3 months to see if it works. If mites, ringworm and food allergies have been rule out then I would consider it behavioral and start her on prozac. If she’s not responded to those things I recommend an anti inflammatory injection from your veterinarian. That will stop the overgrooming and the fur should start to grow in. Then the diffuser and other things you’ve done should reduce the chances of the overgrooming to recurr after the injection wears off. Such overgrooming in cats can be related to allergies or anxiety - feeding a calming food such as royal canin calm or adding a claming supplement containing b vitamins, tryptophan and casein can also help. Occasionally antiinflammatory medications may need to be prescribed by your vet in order to break the recurrent itch-scratch/groom cycle and allow the skin to heal

Cats often over groom from stress and allergies. Giving medication for allergies should help control the itching and if George stops licking for a while then the skin should stop itching and hopefully you can then decrease or stop the medication. Making sure there are no fleas is important as one flea bite can cause itching for a week or more in some cats. Hi thank you for using PetCoach. Excessive grooming can certainly be due to behavioral causes but it could also be due to primary allergic or skin disease. Ideally I would recommend a veterinary work up to in sure there's not a medical condition for his licking and grooming. Allergies, parasites and even some immune system disorders can cause itchiness and sores on the skin. If it does appear to be behavioral the vet can also diet you as far as possibly using anti-anxiety medications to help snoopy. When anxiety treatment you can do at home is he using Feliway pheromone products. I'm sorry Lynx has problems with anxiety. One option for decreasing stress is to add a Feliway Diffuser ( https://www.feliway.com/us#redirected ) to your house. This is a calming pheromone that will work for a month and may be beneficial long term. I have also had luck with Rescue Remedy ( http://www.bachflower.com/rescue-remedy-pet/ ) which can be added to the water. Although you mentioned that this has been a long time problem, it certainly would be worth having your veterinarian examine Lynx to check for any underlying skin problems that are playing a role in her over grooming. Yes, the overgrooming can be from stress or anxiety. To control it quickly you can get a steroid injection from your veterinarian. You can also try using a pheromone diffuser like Feliway, and the anti anxiety supplement Solliquin. These things will help stop the overgrooming until she settles in with the new cat.
