Is my cat overgrooming and licking lips due to new cat stress?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

My 4 year old cat is excessively grooming and pulling out her fur on her hind leg and constantly licking her lips. She eats and plays normally but I'm concerned she may be experiencing anxiety because we rescued another (male) cat nearly 2 months ago . Please advise

Yes, the overgrooming can be from stress or anxiety. To control it quickly you can get a steroid injection from your veterinarian. You can also try using a pheromone diffuser like Feliway, and the anti anxiety supplement Solliquin. These things will help stop the overgrooming until she settles in with the new cat.
