My cat was bitten and has a puncture wound. Does she need a vet?

Pet's info: Cat | British Longhair | Female | spayed | 4 years and 2 months old

I noticed a puncture wound on Mynx on Monday on closer inspection it appears she’s been bitten by something. The wound on one side is very clean the other side has bits fur stuck into. I e cleaned the wounds but wondered if I should take her to my vet

Yes. I would recommend to take her to the vet. The doctor will likely put her on antibiotics to try to clean up the infection. You also need to make sure that she is not licking at the area as this can make it worse. She should wear an Elizabethan collar at all times and be kept indoors completely until the wound is completely healed. I hope she feels better quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.

    Yes. I would gently clean the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps.

    Unfortunately cat bite wounds can become infected very quickly and often there is further damage under the skin that isn't apparent from the outside. For those reasons I recommend your cat get checked out by a veterinarian as early treatment can prevent future complications such as muscle infection. In the meantime keep the area clean and dry and keep your cat indoors. Do not give any human medications as they can be toxic to cats.?

That appears to be infected. I recommend to have Noelle examined by the veterinarian. Infections can spread to the blood stream and it sounds like she is in pain as well. she will likely need the hair clipped away, the area cleaned, an antibiotic, a pain medication and an elizabethan collar to protect the area from further wounds. Try to have her examined within the next 24 hours. I hope she starts feeling better quickly!

This wound needs immediate attention from a vet as it is fairly large. If it is treated quickly before infection sets in it may simply be a case of a few skin staples. If the wound is older the cat will likely need an anaesthetic to fix the wound properly and antibiotics. Your dad has a responsibility as a pet owner to get her appropriate treatment. You should also think about preventative treatment for ticks.

You should clean the wounds with warm, boiled water twice a day until they scab up. If Biscuit becomes lethargic, off food or you notice that the wounds are hot to touch, painful or swollen, you will need to take her to your local vets.
