Injections for cat birth control: Are they safe and effective?

Pet's info: Cat | Scottish Fold | Female | 6 months and 14 days old

My cat is almost 7 months old and soon will start to reproduce. I do not want her to have kids or get her spayed. After doing some research, I learned that there is some kind of injection I could give her every few months to stop her from reproducing. Can you please give me more info. about this injection? How do they work? What are their benefits & side effects, and so on... I am interested in giving her these her injections but I am not going to give her anything I am not sure about. Thankyou!

There are a number of newer non-surgical contraception options for cats and dogs including Gonazon, Suprelorin, Neutersol, Esterilsol, and Infertile. However, many of these drugs are still undergoing testing for safety and efficacy. As a result they are only available in certain countries. As more research is done in this area, more reliable drugs are likely to come to market.

    The injections you are referring to are typically steroid hormones which may lead to a uterine infection known as a pyometra. In the event that occurs, the recommended therapy is an ovariohysterectomy. As a side note, she will be at increased risk for mammary cancer if left intact.

    I do not recommend the injections. I do recommend spaying. If you choose not to spay your cat, please do not allow her to mate so she can avoid reproducing.

IF you do not intend breeding then surgical neutering or possibly long term hormonal implants replaced every 6-12months would be preferable, It is possible to close spay wounds without any additional dressing, usingeither disolvable, internal stitches or suture glue and this would be a permanent solution, reducing the risk of side effects compared to treating life long with human medications which have not been tested in cats (or any patients of that size!).

My vet mentioned spaying by injection. Is that really possible?
Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In the US, spaying means removal of the ovaries and/or uterus which is an abdominal (belly) surgery. We do use an injection to put them under anesthesia. In your country there may be an injection that can sterilize her or prevent her from going in to heat (like birth control). I would ask your Vet to clarify if they are recommending a surgical procedure or medical management to prevent kittens. I hope this helps!

Spaying my cat: Is surgery the only option? What about infection?
The only way to spay a cat is with surgery. They are working on non-surgical sterilization options for cats but right now those are only available for dogs. Your best option is to contact a vet in your area and ask about the procedure. The rate of infection after spay surgery is very low but if that is a concern of yours you can ask the veterinarian to dispense some antibiotics that you can give Lovely after the procedure as a preventive.

There are hormonal shots and oral medications that can be given to suppress estrus, but long term use is not recommended due to the side effects. The only way to stop this behavior completely is to have Lilo spayed. I would recommend getting her spayed.

Hello. While we do not recommend allowing a young cat to become pregnant on a first heat, with proper nutrition, she should not have any growth problems. Spaying is the ultimate contraceptive, but Melatonin implants can suppress fertility short term while slow release GnRH agonist implants containing deslorelin can be used for short & long term contraception in cats. I usually do not recommend these injections. There is a risk for developing diabetes, bone marrow suppression, or a life threatening uterine infection. If you do not want Aarfaa to cycle and are not breeding her you could consider having her spayed.
