My cat has a belly bulge or pouch. Is it normal or concerning?

It is common for larger/overweight cats to develop a large fat pad in this area; this can occasionally become damaged/infected and painful. I recommend you ask your vet tech to check the area and advise if any further tests or biopsy s required. If he is overweight for his size, they can also advise on wiehgt management options to prevent further complications such as joint disease and diabetes

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the swelling is at the belly button, is soft and non-painful it is likely an umbilical hernia. The herniation is usually fat through the body wall. Sometimes they can be pushed in (but come back out) or are permanently out. We usually fix them easily when they are spayed. I swear it happens to most cats after they are spayed or neutered. Even lean cats have a little bit. But yes it can be a sign of being overweight. Based on your photo, maybe Luka is a little overweight. But even having him lose weight won't change the skin that hangs! Just poke it for fun!

Hi there, Typically this is just their fat pad. Most cats have a fat pad but some have one that is more noticeable than others. I would still have your vet her if she's acting lethargic and to make sure what you're seeing isn't something else. I hope that helps and thanks for using Pet Coach!

Hi there. Without being able to examine him, it's hard to say if this is a problem or not. I can tell you that it's normal for cats to have a fat pad that dangles down from their abdomen, between their rear legs - so if this sounds like what you're seeing, then it's likely not a problem but he would need an exam to know for sure. If you're seeing something different, then I don't know what it would be, and would definitely recommend having him checked by a veterinarian when you are able to.

Those are normal fat pads. Most adult cats have these particularly cats who are less active and slightly overweight. They do feel like masses but they are normal and nothing to be overly concerned about. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Ava.

It is possible that there is just a fat pad under the nipples in that region, and that is why the skin is hanging down low. I recommend monitoring it for now, and having your vet take a look the next time you are in. If it becomes uncomfortable, has discharge, becomes swollen, red, hot, or cold, then have it seen right away. It is likely just a fat pad that sits in that region. Best of luck with Shay.
