My cat is attacking her newborn kitten. What should I do to help?

I would be very concerned that Cady will attack the other two kittens, and it's likely best that she is separated from them completely. Some cats are not good mothers, unfortunately :( If Pumpkin is showing aggression towards the kitten or trying to kill it, you will need to remove it from her and bottle-feed it yourself until it's old enough to be weaned. I would recommend getting some kitten milk replacer from a local pet store. You will need to feed the kitten every two hours around the clock for the next few weeks, until it's old enough to begin eating solid food.

The kittens should be weaned at 6-8 weeks. Not all animals are natural, nurturing mothers, and she may just not know how to make the kittens go away. I would recommend separating them. The kittens still need a safe environment and easy access to kitten food, but they no longer need mom for milk.

I recommend using a bottle with a small nipple - you can find kits for newborns at most pet supply stores. A commercial milk replacer like KMR is best, and you should feed the kitten every 2-3 hours. The kitten should be taking about 25 ml of milk per day and you should offer the bottle with the kitten laying on its stomach, not held on its back like a baby. You will also need to stimulate the kitten to urinate and defecate after eating by rubbing a warm washcloth on the genital and anal openings - neonatal kittens cannot urinate or defecate on their own. If the kitten is not interested in the bottle you may need to tube feed and should see your veterinarian for a demonstration.

This is a very concerning finding, if the mother is actively taking the kitten away from the others she may feel this kitten is unwell and may be putting the other kittens at risk. I wold recommend a vet check for the kitten and mother to rule out any signs of infection and it may be worthwhile trying to bottle feed the kitten if rejected by the mother but success rate is quite poor if the kitten is unwell

Try putting Blacky in her own room with the newborn kittens, and keeping her completely separated from the older kittens. Make sure she has a litter box, food, and water in that room. Hopefully that will allow her to focus only on the newborn kittens. Best of luck.
