My cat ate sago palm. Is it poisonous? When should I call the vet?

Unfortunately, the lily plant is one of the most toxic houseplants for cats, and eating as little as two or three leaves is enough to cause liver failure. If left untreated, it can be fatal, and Callie has to see a vet right away. I would call a friend to see if they could come watch your baby, and take her into a vet now. The Pachypodium lamerei is also known as the Madagascar Palm, and from what I can find, it does appear to be toxic to cats. It has a highly toxic sap and if ingested it can cause "vomiting, diarrhea, a lack of appetite, lethargy, an irregular heartbeat, and even death if consumed in large amounts" according to the ASPCA. I would move this plant out of Lucy's reach, even throwing it away or giving it away so she doesn't have any access to it. If Mooch has just eaten the leaf (in the last 30-60 min), you should rinse his mouth with water or offer him plenty of water to drink. If he is asymptomatic, you should monitor him at home. If he does not develop any worrying symptoms in the next 2-3hrs, it will mean that is fine. However, if you notice that Mooch is drooling, vomiting or finds it difficult to eat, you should take him to your local vets right away

After a couple days, there is no sense in taking him to the vet unless he is acting sick. Fortunately, Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) toxicity isn’t as great as that of other types of lilies, including Easter lily and Asiatic lilies. The Peace lily, isn’t a true lily, so it doesn’t cause damage to the kidneys and liver like the other lillies do.

I would be very concerned that he ate some of the plant or has an intestinal/stomach blockage. Your cat needs to get checked out by a veterinarian and potentially blood tests and/or X-rays done as some plants can cause kidney failure or liver issues.

Depending on the type of plant, it may or may not cause harm. If you are able to take part of the plant to a local nursery and find out the type of plant it was, this would be helpful. The main things you want to look for are decrease in activity, decrease in appetite, vomiting or diarrhea. Also look in his mouth of any ulcerstions as some plants only cause a local reaction. Hello, it really depends on what poison or toxin your cat got into. There are specific therapies for these. If it is recent ingestion of a toxin or poison, you may have your veterinarian induce vomiting to prevent the side effects of this toxin. I would recommend finding immediate emergency care for your cat and informing them what specific poison or ingestion of toxin you think your cat got into so that they can better help you.
