My cat ate pillow stuffing. What should I do if he's playing?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 2 years and 1 month old | 5 lbs

Hi, my cat just ate a bite of cotton type pillow stuffing. He swallowed it before I could get to him. He’s now happily playing around the house. What should I do?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Ingestion of cotton stuffing from toys and such can be an issue if it causes an obstruction in the intestines. This can be extremely uncomfortable and even result in a torsion or perforation. Fortunately, if it a small enough amount, it will typically pass. I recommend keeping a close eye on Jasper for vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or lethargy as these may be signs of an obstruction. I’m happy to answer any other questions you may have!

If it was a very small amount of stuffing then it is likely to pass and not cause any issues for Jasper. Please monitor Jasper very closely for any vomiting, lethargy, decreased drinking, or decrease in appetite. If any of these signs occur please take Jasper to see your veterinarian right away. Again, a small amount of stuffing is unlikely to cause an issue but in some cases an intestinal obstruction is still possible.

You can try offering Jasper a canned diet with canned pumpkin or cooked sweet potato mixed in. This increase in fiber may help allow the stuffing to pass more easily.

Hello. The first thing you need to do is recover or throw this bed away. Much depends on how much Snowind may have ingested, but most times only a small piece is ingested. Most pets are just interested in a taste & rarely eat enough to cause a problem. You should just keep an eye on him for any abnormal gastrointestinal signs such as loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea over the next several days. If it was just a very small amount, he will likely be OK. The biggest concern when a dog eats something he shouldn't is a foreign body obstruction, meaning the item causes a blockage of his intestines. This would be a surgical emergency. If Rocky continues to act normally - normal attitude, normal eating/drinking/urinating/defecating, and is not vomiting, he will likely be OK. If he starts vomiting and is acting lethargic, I recommend having him seen by your veterinarian right away. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Rocky!

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern. If Chester is acting normal and there is no vomiting, abdominal pain, lethargy or inappetance then I would monitor for now. If you do start to notice any of these changes, I would get Chester in to see a veterinarian to have an examination and abdominal x-rays or abdominal ultrasound to see if there is an intestinal obstruction due to the ingested toy. My puppy ate toy stuffing. Should I be concerned about obstruction?

Hi there. It could be a little too early for Snowball to pass the stuffing. We always worry any time a puppy ingests anything it shouldn't. Please watch her stools to see if anything is passing or if you note any blood in her feces, etc. If she shows any signs of vomiting or diarrhea, please take her in. Depending on the amount of stuffing she took in-she could potentially become obstructed which could make her very sick. It sounds like you're watching her very closely, good for you! Watch for vomiting, lethargy and not wanting to eat. check his stools with gloves for the piece of bag so you know when to not worry. If he gets sick then he should be seen by a Vet. Good luck

My dog ate cotton from his bed. Will he be okay or is it serious?

Hello, and thank you for your question. Hachi is an adorable pup! If a puppy ingests a large quantity of the cotton stuffing, it may create a blockage in his stomach or intestines which is considered an emergency. If you are unsure of how much he ingested, I would take him to the vet now to check for a blockage. If the cotton was ingested less than 1 hour ago, they may even be able to induce him to vomit in order to throw up the cotton. I hope this helps, and that Hachi is doing okay!
