My cat ate human hair, now straining. When should I call the vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 4 days old | 4.85 lbs

Hi!! I have noticed human hair in his stool for the past 3days ( probably he has swallowed mine ) Today he was straining and i noticed a fur ball and two three hair in his stool.( i brush him daily though) He is dewormed ,but always tries to eat hair and strings. Today he only ate very little of his routine fish meal, but ate his dry food, but still playfull and active. What should i do. Can i wait and see/ shall i take him to vet Thank u..

This is completely up to you. A vet visit is never a bad idea when something seems off. Hair ingestion can cause an intestinal obstruction so I would be a bit worried about that. If you want to give him another 12-18 hours or so to see how he is I think that is reasonable to do. If no improvement after that time he should see a vet. If he starts vomiting at all then he needs to see a vet right away.

Hope this helps. Best wishes.
