My cat ate gabapentin twice. Is he in danger or showing overdose signs?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 13 lbs

I was trying to give my cat 100mg of gabapentin and he wouldnt eat it on his wet food but did on his dry food. Then he had gone back to his wet food and ate that too while I wasnt looking? Is he in a lot of danger? If it’s already metabolized is there anything I can do?

Gabapentin is a faily safe drug and has a wide dosing range so your cat should be just fine. He may be more sleepy and lethargic than normal. Just be sure to keep him somewhere safe while he is sleepy.

Clever kitty....that is how you get fed doubly..... Joke aside, this dose could be a problem. Gabapentin has a very large safety margin, however can cause serious effects such as lethargy, excessive sleeping ataxia, vomiting and diarrhea. If this happened within the past 45 minutes to an hour Your vet or a pet emergency vet can induce vomiting and maybe most of the medication can be evacuated. I would recommend that you call ASPCA's poison control number. That number is 888-426-4435. There is a $65 charge, but they will be able to best advise you. Nikolai should be okay as far as toxicity goes. 300mg is a lot but not at the point at which you would see liver toxicity or other adverse health problems. However, that being said, if he is still lethargic and acting abnormal, I would recommend taking him in to be seen by a veterinarian and have his blood tested to establish a baseline as well. My cat bit a Gabapentin capsule. His pupils are dilated. What now?

100 mg is a regular dose for sedation for fearful or aggressive cats, so just biting it shouldn't affect him much. I recommend keeping an eye on him for adverse symptoms. He may be off-balance, sleepy, may vomit, or drool, but these were observed by owners after a full dose, so again, you may not see much of an effect. If he does seem too sedate, or if he displays any symptoms that concern you, I recommend getting him seen by your vet or an emergency clinic;; it's better to be safe than sorry.

My 65lb pit bull ate too many Gabapentin pills. What should I do?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The dose Peanut ingested is about three times the upper end of the daily dose for a dog his size. Gabapentin commonly causes signs such as lethargy and difficulty moving/disorientation. Peanut may need supportive care such as fluids, administered by a veterinarian if he develops these signs. In the meantime, I recommend keeping a very close eye on him, and having him seen by a vet right away if he develops the signs above. I hope all is well!

Gabapentin has a pretty wide dosage range, so even if you double the dose it is unlikely to be toxic. The most common symptom of too high a dose is sedation. If you need to break open the pills, a more effective way of making sure that Quinton gets all of the powder would be to mix it in a very small amount of wet dog food.

Hello, Gabapentin is a pain medication commonly prescribed to pets after surgery. Mild sedation can be noticed as a side effect, often due to the pain relief allowing the pet to get rest. Dosing should be given every 8-12 hours as needed.
