How long does gabapentin sedation last in my cat after surgery?

Hi, the sedative effects described are expected with the high dose Maggie received. The good news is that they should wear off over the next few hours and within 4 hours she should be more alert and almost back to normal. If you are worried though please have her checked over !

The main side effect of this medication is sedation. This is typically dose related so the higher the dose the more likely sedation will be seen. It was a good idea to wait on the am dose if he was super sleepy. You may want to call your vet to ask about the dose and let them know how he is doing. It has a few uses but we do sometimes use it as an adjunct medication for pain control, although more often for chronic pain/nerve pain. If Mika is still walking around and responsive you can still give her the additional dose in the morning. This will take effect as the first dose starts to wear off and shouldn't lead to significant sedation/unsteadiness. Hope this helps!

Gabapentin can be very useful to reduce anxiety and stress in cats (which can give high blood pressure readings in themselves) and generally only lasts a few hours. If he is disoriented or confused contact your Vets office to discuss his case further

This medication can last for up to 8 hours or so, so I normally tell my clients to expect that their kitty may seem a bit drowsy or off-balance for the rest of the day.

I'm so sorry to hear about Sweedie's passing. Gabapentin has a wide dosing range. The typically dose for a cat is 5 - 10mg/kg every 8-12 hours. So, 20-40mg would be average dosing 2 to 3 times per day. That being said, higher doses have been used like 50mg 1-3 times per day in certain instances. An overdose of this medication is usually only a problem in cats with kidney disease; otherwise they usually just get very sleepy and can have diarrhea with an overdose. I doubt the high dose sped up any infection unless the infection was related to the kidneys. Hope this answers your question. Again, so sorry for your loss.
