My cat ate borax ant killer. Is it an emergency? What should I do?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 10 years and 6 months old | 11 lbs

my cat ate 1 teaspoon of borax mixed with 1 teaspoon of sugar which I had mixed to eliminate ants. It was in a small dish on the cupboard and I never thought she would eat something like that. I started giving her as much of her food as she would eat and then I mixed two capsules of activated charcoal in the food and she ate it all. No emergency vet is open now. This happened about 30 minutes ago. I'm scared. She is acting fine right now.

Borax is toxic to cats and you can see vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and excessive thirst. This really does have to be checked out by a vet immediately, and emergency vets should be open all night. Please take Rocket Girl into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Generally, the biggest issue that we may see with ingestion of borax is stomach upset and vomiting - so it's very possible that you may see this. In large amounts, borax can cause kidney failure in dogs, but this is uncommon and usually the result of long-term exposures rather than a single ingestion. If you're concerned, you can always opt to take Rocky to your nearest emergency vet for supportive care to help prevent any problems.

Can borax ant traps harm cats, even if not directly ingested?

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your cat! How awful. It's very unlikely that the ant traps would have had anything at all to do this with this - borax is fairly non-toxic, and would require ingestion of a really large amount in order to cause any serious problems. Exposure to traces of it from simply being in the same area as the traps should not cause any issues at all. Again, I'm very sorry for the loss of your kitty.

My cat licked ant poison (Terro/borax), is lethargic, not vomiting.

Terro has a very low toxicity to humans and animals but if he is acting lethargic then he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can run blood-work, if needed, to help diagnose the problem and then determine if treatment is needed.

Because Blue only licked it so briefly, I would not rush her into a vet. You may see some drooling and frothing at mouth. I would rinse out her mouth with cool water using a syringe, and keep an eye on her. If she does start acting out of the ordinary, starts having uncoordinated movements, tremors, convulsions, or seizures, I would take her into a vet immediately.

I would recommend that you call ASPCA's poison control number. That number is 888-426-4435. There is a $65 charge, but they will be able to best advise you. Please have the label available so you can let them know the type of poison listed, and what any other potentially concerning ingredients were.
