My cat has asthma. What inhaler has the least steroid side effects?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

Sweetie had asthma attacks some time ago which I mistook for hairballs but I investigated and realized her symptoms matched sthma, I quickly changed her environment and food for possible allergens to see if that would help and it did. But she did have one this month due to someone petting her when they had too much cologne on, I have vet appt soon fo a rescue pump for sound of mind but I do not want her on any steriods due to their effects. If so what steriod inhailer has the least side effects?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sweetie. I am glad that she will see her veterinarian for an examination. X-rays are typically of the chest as well. Based on these results, a diagnosis of asthma can be made in most cases. You are correct that inhalers can be used to manage this condition. A steroid inhaler such as fluticasone works well for daily use. This works very well with minimal systemic side effects. However, this medication tends to be very expensive. Albuterol is another medication that can be used in the inhaler. It is not a steroid. This is better for rescue situations such as during an attack. I hope this information helps!

I am so sorry that Spectre is going through this. Albuterol 90 mcg usually just 1 puff is used in cats in times of respiratory distress. I would not wait and I would get her into see an emergency veterinarian immediately. The albuterol will wear off and when it does she needs to either be in an oxygen cage or have enough steroids on board to calm her airways. I would encourage you to discuss an Aerokat mask with your veterinarian as these can be really useful in administering the albuterol to kitties. Also an inhaled steroid may be a good idea as well. My cat has asthma and won't take oral meds. Are shots an option?

There is an injection called depo medrol, i personally do not recommend it as potential side effects can be very serious. the better option in my opinion are tablets, prednisolone tablets for cats are very small and easily hidden in gravy or wet food. most cats eat the wet food and never even suspect there is a tablet inside. it's not a big deal if you are 1-2 hours late.

In cats, URI are typically caused by a virus, not bacteria, so antibiotics will have no effect. That is likely why the vet did not prescribe Sweetie any antibiotics. They wouldn't work and using antibiotics when it's not called for results in decreased sensitivity to antibiotics and possible resistance. Albuterol relaxes the smooth muscle in the airways and provides relief from obstructive airway diseases, such as asthma. Albuterol belongs to a class of drugs called bronchodilators. No, there are no herbal medications that can help with this condition. i don't know what medication your vet prescribed but asthma can be well controlled with prednisolone alone. this treatment will cost you less than 10$ a month (!!), i'm sure you can afford that.

My cat has recurring wheezing. What are safe Depo-Medrol alternatives?

If the depo medrol works, then this is likely feline asthma. Unfortunately the treatment for that is generally a gluco-corticoid, but usually as an inhaler (with fluticasone) and a broncho-dilating medication to open the airways and facilitate breathing.. There have been various treatments with other anti-asthma medications such as zaphirlucast and montelucast, however they are not licensed for cats.
