My cat has anal sac disease. What can I do to help them feel better?

Poor kitty. He may need his anal sacs expressed. I'd have him seen by a vet to have them expressed. Then I would give him Glandex, which is a supplement that can help with anal sac health. Make sure he has plenty of fiber in his diet. Brands of cat food I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, and Iams.

These will need to be expressed by vet or vet to relieve the discomfort, bathing the area with salted water in the meantime can help. Additional fiber in the diet can b used to prevent recurrence and be sure to keep up to date with deworming medications

In some cases it can decrease how often they need to be expressed. I would discuss with her veterinarian if either of these may be compatible with her diet.

They are more rare in cats than in dogs, but not unusual. The best way to avoid them in the future is to increase the amount of fiber and grain in her diet. Since cats can be picky, it is best added by finding a formula with it built in.

Sorry to hear that Butter cup is having a recurring issue. In most cases, there isn't much you can do to hasten the recovery. Simply keep the area clean and preventing any licking is the best that can be done. Typically the area is flushed out initially and sometimes antibiotics are utilized. In cases of recurrence, sometimes the anal sacs are actually removed entirely (as this is the only way to absolutely know that it will not happen again). If surgical removal is something you opt to do, your veterinarian may or may not refer you elsewhere for this type of procedure. While not extremely complicated, some veterinarians prefer not to do surgery in this anatomic region due to the possible complications associated with fecal incontinence. Hope this helps.

I hate to hear that Lulu is having issues with FIC. It is a very common condition in cats. When you are feeding any of the urinary diets, you must feed that diet exclusively. The diets are generally designed to affect the acidity of the urine as well as stimulate drinking. When you mix the diet, those properties are negated so they don't work. I would recommend to feed a diet made by Royal Canin that combines Urinary S/O and Calm. It's a multifunction diet. The S/O will control the urinary signs and the Calm actually helps relieve stress. As you likely know, FIC is in part related to stress. Once you start the diet, it will take about 1 month to take full effect. For her anal glands, you could try a product such as Glandex to see if that helps control her anal sac issues. This is a spontaneous thing that can happen in pets with anal gland problems, where the anal glands fill up and are not able to express normally. We think this is caused by an underlying allergy, which can be discussed with your vet. Sometimes giving your pet a high fiber diet can help prevent reoccurence. Peanut Butter needs to see your vet for a short course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicine to help this wound heal properly. He may also need the anal gland to be flushed thoroughly while under a mild sedative. I would recommend scheduling an appt for him soon to get this taken care of. In the meantime, you can purchase an e-collar from your local pet store and place it on him to deter him from licking the area and making the inflammation/irritation worse. Poor guy. I hope he gets this resolved soon and is able to go back to his normal self. Best of luck and take care.
