My cat had an abscess. Is lethargy normal? What are signs of recovery?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered

My cat had an abscess in his front paw. It spread to his near neck area(where the leg meets his chest). Vet has put a cut and drained the puss out of it. Has given antibiotic + vit B complex. It has been 3 days. He is still very lethargic but has started to eat( very little though). Also he has started to urinate.(its of pale yellow color. Is this an improvement? Can i expect a full recovery with full course of the meds?

Abscesses can be very painful and usually it takes a few days of treatment to start to feel better. Recovery is normally complete.
However as with any infection there is always a chance of developing sepsis, I would monitor him closely and attend the vet if he does not make any further improvements. Also he may still be fairly uncomfortable so it would be worth discussing further pain relief with your vet.
