My cat is in heat and very vocal. How can I calm her down safely?

Yes you are correct that these symptoms indicate she is in heat. There aren’t too many things to do here besides getting her spayed to remove the hormones. These likely won't help much with the behaviors of a cat in heat, as these calming tablets work on animals with anxiety. Certainly you can try it, but because these behaviors are hormonally driven, the only way to stop these behaviors is to remove the source of the hormones: the uterus and ovaries. I would have Jolly spayed as soon as possible if you don't want to deal with her behaviors during heat.

Unfortunately there is nothing specific to do to comfort her - she will show behavior changes until she is out of heat, and cats will cycle in and out of heat until they are bred. You could try something like a Feliway diffuser or other pheromone spray that might help her relax. Otherwise you should go ahead and try to schedule the spay surgery - ask your vet when they would feel most comfortable proceeding with surgery since she is currently in heat. Keep in mind that since hormones can persist for a period of time after surgery she may still show symptoms of a heat cycle for awhile.

Unfortunately nothing can be done to ease symptoms of heat in cats, it is often very dramatic and can happen dozens of times a year. the only thing that can stop these symptoms is to have her spayed which is why most owners chose to have it done right after the first heat cycle.

My first thought is whether Misty has been spayed/ fixed or not as she may be hollering for a mate. If she is spayed, then other sedatives / anxiety medicines may be effective to help curb her night time behavior. I dont have a lot of personal experience using chlorpheniramine in cats, but this class of antihisthamine is relatively safe. The drugs that I may consider dispensing would be gabapentin or amitryptilline. These are both prescription medicines. I have found minimal benefit in herbal remedies in cats - valerian would not be very effective. Royal Canin make a diet called "Calm" which can help with anxiety/ stress behaviors as well.

Those side effects are more common with chronic long term use. One to two doses prior the appointment will provide mild sedation and help calm her for the visit. You can try feliway spray. You spray a towel for the carrier and place a towel on top to help keep her covered
