Why is there blood near my cat's litter box? What should I do?

I hate to hear that Jet is giving you such a scare! Yes, I would recommend to take Jet into the veterinarian's office today. The blood is either from his rectum or his bladder. The doctor need to check a urinalysis and will give him medication. Urinary tract infections, crystals in the urine, sterile cystitis and bladder stones can all cause bleeding in the urinary tract. These conditions are also painful (which cats can hide). I would recommend to take in a stool sample just in case the doctor wants to look at that as well. Blood in the stool indicates significant inflammation in the intestines and is treated with antibiotics to prevent the bacteria from moving into the blood stream. Blood drops from flea poop would be very very tiny. Blood drops from a UTI would be b igger, but you would likely see them in the cat litter as well and your kitty would like make a fuss in the box, going frequently but only producing little urine every time. Your kitty could also have a bleeding mouth ulcer, bad gingivitis or teeth, lost a canine tooth and it is now bleeding, or could be bleeding from the nose. I suggest you have a look in her mouth, (gently). If she lost a tooth,, you likely will not have to do anything unless it broke off. If you see sores, or your kitty has a bad smell from her mouth, you need to take her to the vet for an exam. If she appears to have a UTI, then she needs to be examined by a vet also.

Blood in the urine can be due to a few different problems. If it is red-colored urine and Lily has been urinating more frequently lately, then it is most likely a bladder infection/inflammation, but could also be a kidney infection. If it appears like fresh blood at the end of the urine stream, then this could indicate a problem with the vagina, cervix, or could be coming from the rectum. Either way, it's best that you take Lily to a veterinarian for treatment soon. If she is going to the litter box and nothing is coming out within the last 24 hours, then this is an emergency and I recommend you take her to the vet immediately. They will be able to locate where the problem is and provide the most appropriate treatment. Either way, Lily will need a professional to diagnose this problem and to provide the most effective treatment. Without good treatment, she can have life-threatening complications. She may have an anal sac abscess, or she could have a little bit of colitis and she just hasn’t had a bowel movement for you to see the full effect of what is going on. It could be a urinary infection or a bladder inflammation it could also be coming from the anal area which would make me suspect of a gastrointestinal issue. either way i would strongly advise to take her to the vet ASAP in order to get it treated.

Well I wouldn't expect any of the cats to be sick from the lilies if they just sniffed it and didn't actually ingest any of them. So that is not a concern, especially if you don't see any other overt signs of lily toxicity which would include vomiting, lethargy and a lack of appetite. However a cystitis or UTI is a possible cause of the bloody urine. One good way to determine which cat is responsible is to isolate one cat at a time in a small room with a clean litterbox in it for a day, then monitor the urine output for blood. Another thing you could do is to gently palpate (feel) the cats bladder (lower abdomen) to see which one seems uncomfortable or painful. You could also try to monitor the cats for 1 hr duration to see which one is constantly going to the litterbox. Chances are the one that is affected is going many times within the hour and will be noticeably drinking more water as well.

I do think it would be a good idea to see the vet but it can sometimes be very difficult to find the source of the blood in a situation like this. A sneeze is possible but you would probably also see some nasal discharge. If it is from urine I would expect that a cat would be visiting the litter box frequently or straining to urinate. Toenails and ears can also bleed if they are injured. Since blood in the urine in particular can be very serious I'd recommend seeing a vet sooner rather than later even if both cats seem fine otherwise.
