My cat bit a tree clipping. Is ash toxic to cats? Will he be okay?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center. Pothos plant can cause significant irritation to the mouth, esophagus and stomach. If Mooch has just eaten the leaf (in the last 30-60 min), you should rinse his mouth with water or offer him plenty of water to drink. If he is asymptomatic, you should monitor him at home. If he does not develop any worrying symptoms in the next 2-3hrs, it will mean that is fine. However, if you notice that Mooch is drooling, vomiting or finds it difficult to eat, you should take him to your local vets right away

No, you do not need to worry about toxicity if it was only one pod and pruned it without gloves. You mentioned in your previous post that you thoroughly washed your hands after cutting it. You will need to ingested the pod or the seeds to get toxicity, same for your cat. You also said previously that your cat may have bit at the branches, and you can check the pod to see if there are teeth marks from her biting into it. Just biting it won't be enough, however, to cause toxicity, she would actually have to eat it. Just for your piece of mind, the symptoms of toxicity include vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and collapse. You would see signs within 4-24 hours, but based on what you have told me, both you and your cat should be just fine :-)

If you aren't seeing any blisters and Ash is acting normally, then I would just watch him for now. I would not take him into a vet. Should he shows any signs of problems, such as pain, discomfort, loss of appetite, blisters in his mouth, trouble grooming, or lethargy, have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

Depending on the type of plant, it may or may not cause harm. If you are able to take part of the plant to a local nursery and find out the type of plant it was, this would be helpful. The main things you want to look for are decrease in activity, decrease in appetite, vomiting or diarrhea. Also look in his mouth of any ulcerstions as some plants only cause a local reaction. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be due to ingesting the plant as sometimes this causes vomiting. Sometimes it can result in inflammation of the mouth. Unfortunately, Bella really needs to see a veterinarian to at least be examined and treated symptomatically. That many episodes of vomiting can result in severe dehydration which is quite serious. I highly recommend you consider taking her to a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Best of luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You are correct tulips are toxic to cats. The toxins are more concentrated in the bulbs. If a cat ingests a lot of the plant it can experience drooling, GI upset, breathing problems, high heart rate and neurologic signs like seizures. If you want to keep the plants be sure to put them where Lumi can’t get too. Cats are athletic and can jump up high. I hope this help!
