Is apricot kernel oil toxic to cats? What should I do if my cat ate it?

Cherry seeds are known to contain cyanide, which can cause toxicity if enough are eaten and if the pit is broken when eaten. Cats normally would not chew the pit, so the poison would not be released in that case. Even if the pit was broken, this would not be enough to cause toxicity. She would have to have eaten five or more for it to cause a problem. The main concern with cyanide toxicity is a decrease in the ability for oxygen to get into the blood. If your cat happens (very unlikely) to show an increase in respiratory rate or forceful breathing, then a visit to the vet would be required. Otherwise, the kitty should be fine as it normally takes much more than this to cause a problem. I hope that helps and all is well.

And as long as you didn't get any into her eyes, she should be OK. In the future, it is not recommended to use human shampoos on animals - there are special animal shampoos that are not as irritating if gotten into the eyes, and nontoxic if consumed. I recommend monitoring for any vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, or any neurologic signs such as tremors or seizures. These could indicate a toxicity. If she is squinting her eyes, this could mean you got shampoo in her eyes and caused damage to her corneas. If you see any of these signs, she should be seen by a veterinarian right away. Apricots and the pits can be toxic (cyanide poisoning) but a dog Reggie's size would need to ingest many pits at once to get close to a toxic dose of cyanide. Clinical signs of toxicity would be expected rather quickly if a toxic dose was ingested, so if no signs after a few hours of ingestion then he is likely fine. I would certainly try to prevent him from eating these though. Number one, they are toxic and, number two, the pits can cause a blockage in the intestines which would require emergency surgery to correct. It is better to be safe than sorry and prevent ingestion altogether. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi. Poor Joey. Good news is they aren't toxic to him. The only concern would be if for some reason the shell gets stuck in the intestines and causes a block. Hopefully he chewed it well. Lol. A blockage is rare, but possible. Monitor closely for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, anorexia, or decreased defecation. You would then want to see your veterinarian if you notice any of those right away. Good luck.

No, you do not need to worry about toxicity if it was only one pod and pruned it without gloves. You mentioned in your previous post that you thoroughly washed your hands after cutting it. You will need to ingested the pod or the seeds to get toxicity, same for your cat. You also said previously that your cat may have bit at the branches, and you can check the pod to see if there are teeth marks from her biting into it. Just biting it won't be enough, however, to cause toxicity, she would actually have to eat it. Just for your piece of mind, the symptoms of toxicity include vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and collapse. You would see signs within 4-24 hours, but based on what you have told me, both you and your cat should be just fine :-)
