Why is my anxious cat losing hair and getting scabs from grooming?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 7.6 lbs

I have a male neutered domestic short hair that is losing hair. He does have anxiety. I'm wondering if his nervousness is causing him to excessively groom and rib out his fur. It's along his stomach, sides and legs. Basically any part that his mouth can't readily reach is untouched. What puzzles me is in some areas he has perfectly round little scabs. All exactly the same. Just red little scabs. Is that from the hair ripping or another symptom?

I would recommend that you have Ozzy examined by a vet. It is hard to tell you which came first, the overgrooming or the scabs, as it could easily be either one. From the distribution, I would highly suspect overgrooming, which can be caused by anxiety. But there are a few other things that can cause it as well (see the attached link below for more information on causes). A vet can help you figure out what could be the cause and make a treatment plan to help Ozzy not pull out his fur.

Stress and anxiety can cause cats to over-groom and have hair loss. You could try a Feliway diffuser and Solliquin chews and see if that helps. He could also have a skin infection or allergies, especially if he has any lesions on his skin. You could have him examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or a corticosteroid to help treat.

It can take several months for the fur to grow back. It is true that some cats can be very anxious and pull out their hair as a result. However, this does not mean there couldn't be another component that could be causing skin irritation or itch, like allergies, fleas, mites, etc. I would recommend that you have Jamie examined by a vet to see if there is a medical cause for the hair plucking. See the link below for possible causes and to get a few ideas to discuss with your vet. If no medical cause is found, he could be started on supplements or prescription medications for anxiety. Common OTC supplements in cats include Xylkene or Feliway Pheromone Diffusers.

My cat is overgrooming, losing hair, and peeing. Should I see a vet?

Poor Boda! Overgrooming is usually a symptom of allergic skin disease or emotional stress. He may respond quite well to a veterinary prescription allergy diet like Hills z/d and stop overgrooming completely. Some cats need to be on allergy medication like steroids to help with the symptoms. If stress or emotional issues are the culprit, then Boda might need to be on antidepressants or anti anxiety medication designed for cats like Zylkene or Feliway spray. If you want to try something before taking him to the vet, buy some Feliway cat pheromone spray and allergy diet like z/d and try that for 8-10 weeks, as both may work and save you a trip to the vet! If there is no medical reason such as fleas or food allergy and it is behavioral there is medication to help. She may notice another animal or cat outside that is new that is stressing her out and causing her to do this more, There may be a new neighbor with a dog that she smells passing by the door increasing her anxiety. You can start with feliway diffusers and sprays to help in side the apartment. You can also talk to your vet about anxiety medication to start her on to decrease this behavior.

Why is my cat over-grooming, causing belly sores and tail scabs?

This looks like a eosinophilic plaque. He needs to see a vet for this condition. Here is an article on this condition. Overgrooming can be caused by a few medical problems, such as fleas, food allergies, mites, or internal medical disease. I would take Milly to a vet to rule out these issues. My cat's losing fur after diet change. Is it allergy or anxiety?

This could be either one or both. Without seeing him in person, it’s hard for me to say for sure. Since the hairloss is new and since your are pregnant, I would have your vet check him out to see to make sure nothing else is going on. Your vet will be able to start him on some medicine to help his fur. Your vet can even start an anti-anxiety medicine if he isn’t improving. I hope this helps!

Why is my cat losing hair and getting scabs around her mouth?

This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment (advocate or advantage), then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics).
