My cat is antisocial. Should I get another cat? Age and gender?

Getting a new cat is tricky. Cats are like humans, sometimes they need friends and sometimes they prefer to be alone. If you think Fright needs a friend, I would recommend looking for groups that would allow you to try it out for a week and see how Fright responds. Gender doesn't usually make a difference.

Likely getting a young adult cat would be best so that they are about the same age and may have similar energy levels. It doesn't matter male or female as long as they are both fixed. Pay more attention to personality and look for a cat who is already in a social situation with other cats. Try to get a cat with a temperament similar to Kovu's. You can give her more playtime with you, use a feliway pheromone diffuser to help her relax and make sure she has a quiet spot to get away from any noisy activity. If she's still not coming around then getting a young kitten may be good. She should enjoy a baby kitten but I wouldn't get a teenage or older cat as it may make her more anxious and then you have two to worry about. I think getting another kitty friend for Spooky is a great idea. Try to get a cat who is similar in age, personality type and energy level. Ideally get a cat who is socialized with cats. Many shelters now house cats in communal areas. Spend some times watching the cats to get an idea of their temperaments. You don't want to adopt a cat is is scared and hiding from other cats just like you don't want to adopt a bully. It doesn't matter if its male or female. Matching the energy levels is much more important. Also keep in mind that most cats will not hit it off right away. Adding a female kitten is probably better than having three males. Also two kittens may be too much of an upset for your older boy. The extra stress could cause behavioral problems such as inappropriate urination or over grooming. I always prefer not getting two animals from the same litter since they tend to bond to one another rather than people. Yes, I think this would be the cat that I would choose. A one year old is not as crazy and playful as a younger kitten and you should already be able to get a good idea of her personality. It is good to choose a laid back and non-threatening cat. No matter who you choose, your male cat will not line it at first. There is always an adjustment period for cats to accept another cat. It certainly may help! Just like people, some cats are more social than others. If you decide to get her a playmate, try to find a cat with a similiar, playful temperament and about her same age (that way the energy level is matched). Ideally get a cat who is coming from a living arrangement with other cats so that it is already use to living with other felines. Expect that there may be some hissing or unease for the first couple weeks. It’s very normal for this behavior in the beginning and does not mean they won’t like each other.
