Will an American Shorthair cat be safe for my child's allergies?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 8 lbs

I have found a home for an american shorthair cat we took in, but the new owners want to know if their child will be safe around it due to allergy concerns. They previously had a persian cat that did not bother him, will an american shorthair be safe by default or no?

There is no way to know unless the chilc has contact with the cat. It is not the hair that causes the allergy , but the proteins in the saliva left behind on the fur when grooming. It is possible that the child is allergic to certain kinds of salivary proteins only. There are no safe by default cats, I am afraid, even when breeders like to use that as a sales pitch.
