How to train my scared bird to comfortably step up on my hand?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 1 month old

After 2 weeks of hand feeding zucchini I tried yesterday to tame him But he is afraid from my hand and he put 1 feet only on my finger Every time he put his single feet on it i reward him with a millet spray Is it a correct way to trainer him to perch my hand with his 2 feets without being afraid and being comfortable with this situation ??

You are doing fine. Do not rush him or force him to step up. Use other high value treats. This can include grapes, scrambled egg, a bit of a peanut or sunflower seeds. Move slowly and talk softly around him. Be patient. Eventually, he will step up on your finger. When he does, praise and reward him. When he is doing it regularly, you can slowly remove him from the cage. Be sure all windows and doors are closed, fans are off and nobody is cooking.
