Is my baby Quaker parrot sick? Falling, not eating, small stools.

It would be best to bring your bird to a local avian veterinarian, especially if he has been ill for a few weeks. it's possible that an underlying illness, neurologic issue, muscular disease, stroke or other problem has occurred that needs to be examined and treated as needed. In some cases birds may not recover fully, and you may need to adjust your bird's environment to help him get around a little easier, such as adding in flat platform perches or changing access to food and water.

If he is always fluffed up or otherwise listless, this can be a sign that he isn't feeling very well, and an exam from your vet is always a good idea. As for the pottying, birds tend to just go wherever they are (some can be trained not to), and so if he's perching on the food and water, he is likely to go there. Adding in some perches similar to the dishes may encourage him to perch there instead, or simply getting dishes that are more of a silo instead of a bowl can prevent stool from getting in them. Daily cleaning of all dishes will also help with any stool that gets in them.

It sounds like an exam is in order for Cookie just to rule out issues such as a GI problem, infection, parasites, etc that could be making her feel unwell and thus become moody or picky about eating. Constantly offering a balanced diet for her is best, to ensure sure gets the right nutrition. It's not a good idea to let her binge on one type of food or only one type of snack as that isn't balanced or healthy and could be part of the reason why she isn't doing well. Ruling out issues with your vet, and starting her on a complete balanced diet is a good first step.

Thanks for reaching out about Cloud. Unable to stand could be the result of poor bone density and splay leg. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess the condition and provide possible treatments. An all seed diet does not provide calcium for growing bones. Slippery substrate made development of limbs and ligaments problematic with results of play leg. Seek a veterinary visit. Good luck.

Being weak and lethargic, are only general signs of illness and are not specific for any particular problem. It is often difficult to differentiate between loose stool and polyuria (increased urine), as they often pass both at the same time. This must be examined as the birds passes a bowel movement to identify well formed feces. A loose stool can be the result of an intestinal infection, liver disease, ingested foreign body (particle, toxin, other) and more. Increased urination can be due to increased water intake (behavioral, kidney or liver disease, diabetes (rare), environmental stresses (heat, breeding season, change in diet). Providing supplemental heat in the 80-85 F range, 24/7 can sometimes support the immune system. If the weakness continues, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Good luck.

Hi, what you are describing does sound like signs of illness. Kiwi could have an infection or other disease and it is important to have him evaluated by a veterinarian. They can do an exam and any tests that are needed to determine the best treatment. Birds do get sick quickly and tend to hide symptoms, so you are right to be concerned about these changes. If Sky's behavior has changed recently, and you are are also noticing a change in stool consistency without a change in diet or environment, then having him examined by your vet is a good idea. Some environmental changes, such as extreme heat may cause a bird to be more lethargic until it cools down, however they should still otherwise be eating, drinking and moving about some. Diet changes can also change the color or consistency of stool if there are colored pellets or different seeds introduced. It may be that he is still mourning the loss of his friend, and so is less active, however being completely uninterested in activities, having a change in stool without a diet change, or sleeping all the time are not considered normal.
