Is pine wood safe for making bird perches and cage accessories?

It depends on who you ask. The cones don't have as much of the aromatic oils that shavings have in them. Owners who do choose to offer pine cones will wash them in hot water then bake them in an oven at low temp to dry them out, evaporate any residual oils and to kill bacteria/fungus. If the toy was made specifically for guinea pigs, it is likely fine. If you are still concerned, remove and discard the cone part of the toy or remove the entire toy. Monitor for lethargy, decreased appetite or loose stool.

Eastern white pine is general considered the "safe" pine to use as rabbit chews. The other species of pine contain higher levels of phenols which are toxic. Pine, ideally, should be kiln dried, before being offered. The high temps "bake" the phenols out of the wood. Pine needles while not toxic, can cause stomach upset or an obstruction if enough are eaten. To be safe, stay away from them.

It would be safest to avoid all types of pine bedding. There are other options that are safer such as aspen shavings or any one of the recycled paper type bedding materials. The current bedding is fine to use as well.

Destroying wooden toys and ladders is actually natural behavior in birds and is good enrichment. Some things you can do is offer a variety of other toys and things that they can destroy. Use newspaper or cardboard rolls to wrap and hold treats to give them something to destroy and forage at the same time. You can consider getting slightly thicker woofer toys that may last longer or combining some plastic perches and ladders with wood. A variety of shape sizes and textures is healthier than one size and style only. Concrete type perches help to file thier nails. Wood such as Manzanita is extremely hard and much more durable than the plain wood perches. Below are some toy ideas. Hi and thank you for your question, You will find all sorts of opinions about this. In general, eucalyptus can be used for perches but avoid the leaves and fruit. Edible fruit trees or Hibiscus branches are better. Regards

Thanks for reaching out about your cockatiel. There are concerns over sand perches as the abrasiveness can lead to minor dermal trauma, and then possible infection if standing on a perch with feces. Not recommended. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about your parakeet. As long as the rope is not treated with anything. Natural rope from the hardware store is often treated with anti-fungals, which could be a problem. If from pet store, assume it is okay. Good luck.
