My pigeon is shivering a lot. What's wrong and what can I do?

Unfortunately, lethargy/sleepiness is a very vague symptom that may just indicate she isn't feeling well, but not what is causing her to feel that way. A good step would be to bring her to the vet, especially if you note any other signs of illness such as changes in weight, acting listless even when you're not interacting with her, not eating or drinking, stool changes, etc. If she checks out healthy, or seems normal and healthy otherwise when you aren't trying to pet her, it could just be that Pidgey is getting more used to you, and is actually enjoying your touch enough to relax and rest around you. This can be a good sign of bonding! However, if she seems ill or you are concerned, a vet appointment in person is best.

It could be stress or excitement from the new environment, handling or a combination. If she is bobbing her tail excessively while breathing, this can indicate potential illness. Monitor for lethargy, decreased appetite or loose droppings. Give her a few days to acclimate and if the behavior persists, have her examined by your veterinarian. Have her examined sooner if she develops any of the above symptoms.

If your baby bird doesn't have all his feathers in yet, he could still be having a hard time regulating temperature. Feeding food that is chilled or too cold may cause his temperature to decrease some, causing the shivering. Making sure the food is room temperature and that your baby bird is in a warm enough environment can help. However, if the shivering continues or if you see any other signs of illness it is best to have it checked out by a vet.

Those are all very general signs that could indicate Quill isn't feeling well, especially since birds are very good at hiding illnesses until its too late. If the temperature in her room checks out OK and she is still showing symptoms, it wouldn't hurt to bring her to a vet just in case to rule out any issues. Taking note of any other changes, such as to stool consistency, eating habits, etc can also help clue you in (and your vet) to possible issues.

The pictures are really blurry so it's hard to see, but if you're seeing round cylinder-like feathers protruding from the skin that is likely a pin feather. This is a normal feather that is growing back in after the old one is lost. If your bird recently lost a lot of feathers and is now growing them back, they likely were molting, which is normal! This is just the normal replacement of old feathers with new ones. If Sheephony seems cold, moving them to a warmer location until their feathers have regrown can help.

Sky might be feeling a bit cold or nervous from the change to a new home. Making sure his cage is kept in an area that is free of drafts and not too warm or cold can help, as well as making sure it's not in an area that is super busy or noisy. Give him a few days to settle down in his new home- you can observe and offer him some treats in the cage itself, but waiting a bit to handle him until he's had a change to settle in may help.

Thanks for reaching out about Peach. Shaking can be from many reasons. Being too cold is one, most parrots are comfortable in 80-85 degree weather. They shiver to create heat. Covering the cage will not generate any additional heat, so a heat lamp should be provided. Shaking can also result from being sick.
