My pigeon laid an egg and is weak. What food and calcium to give?

My pigeon has laid an egg. She is weak. What food should I give her during these days? I heard of grit. Is it good for pigeon? Will they eat them? Is it a stone or what? Give me a list of healthy foods.

Thanks for reaching out about Sheephony. Grit is for the grinding of food in the stomach and does not provide any nutrients. Oyster shell or cuttlebone can supply some calcium, generally lost in the forming and laying of the egg. Green vegetables will also help with calcium. If she is weak, a veterinary visit is recommended for caloric, nutrient and fluid administration. Give heat support in the 80-85 F range for aid.

If Sheephony is not getting enough calcium or the right balance of nutrition, then the egg shells will likely be very weak and it will be very taxing on her. It is best to remove any eggs if they are weak or broken, and to make sure she is on a balanced diet along with extra calcium such as grit, eggfood, oyster shells, etc, to make sure she is able to lay without becoming ill.

I would be concerned about her having very low calcium. Birds need lots of calcium since they put it into the egg shells. I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian as soon as possible for treatment. However you cannnot rule out parasites, infectious disease and trauma.

Thanks for reaching out about Sheephony. The entire hard boiled egg, including the shell can be chopped and offered, probably once weekly. Fruits are not that healthy and should be offered sparingly. Vegetables should include green leafy but also red/yellow/orange vegetables to provide a wide range of vitamins/minerals. Good luck.

How much calcium does my lovebird need, especially when laying eggs?

Birds require calcium for more than just egg laying. It strengthens bones, aids in enyzme and hormone function, muscle development, nerve transmission and certain metabolic processes among other biological functions. A cuttlebone or mineral block should always be available. Limit dehydrated fruits that can be high in sugar. Fresh fruits, vegetables and greens would be preferred. They should make up no more than 25% of the diet. Pellets should make up the majority of her diet at 75%. Fresh foods can make up the remaining 25%. Generally, anything good for you is good for her except for chocolate, caffeine, alcohol and avocado.

Unless your vet recommended it specifically, I would be giving eggfood or even cuttlebone/oyster shell as a calcium alternative to the Tums if you need a long-term calcium boost (Tums is great for short-term after an egg-binding episode, but longer term eggfood or oyster shell may be easier on your bird's GI tract). Otherwise, her diet and routine looks pretty good!

She is probably drinking water. I am sure you are not looking at her 24/7 so I would assume she is drinking when you are not watching. If she is not drinking or eating well then she is probably sick. She may have a vitamin/mineral deficiency from laying the eggs. Unfortunately, it would be hard to say without an exam. It's possible that she injured the leg, has an issue with poor nutrition if she's not leaving the nest to eat enough, or there is something else ongoing. Making sure she's eating and drinking, and checking the leg for injuries is a good first step. If you suspect an illness or problem, a vet visit is needed to treat it. Pigeon eggs should also hatch in about 20 days, so if it's been longer than that and not hatched, it is likely not viable and should be removed so that she can get back to eating and drinking normally.

Is lawn mowing bad for my bird? What calcium is best for egg-laying?

Mowing grass should not affect Peaches at all unless chemicals were used on the lawn, in which case just closing the window and moving her to a well ventilated area should be fine. Egg food is fine to give, however if you'd rather switch to crushed oysters or cuttlebone, that is a fine source of calcium as well.
