My pigeon's wing was attacked by a cat. What should I do now?

It would be best to try and get your bird into a vet as soon as you can. In the meantime, cleaning any wounds and keeping them free of dirt and debris, and keeping your bird from pecking at it can help prevent infection of the wounds. Keeping your bird warm, with low perches in case he falls, and easy access to food and water may also help until he can get into your vet.

My best recommendation is for you to find an avian veterinarian. If there are none in your area you may be able to find one at a nearby teaching hospital/vet school or a specialty/referral center. You may also want to try calling the store where you got Pepa and see if they can refer you to an avian veterinarian. In the meantime, it is good that you were able to stop the bleeding. Continue to monitor Pepa and keep her warm and encourage her to eat. Hopefully the wound was just superficial and won’t cause any issues. It sounds like you are doing about everything you can to help Sunny. My biggest concern is that she has a broken bone and/or nerve damage that may be irreversible. If you are not able to take her to the vet continue with your current therapy and do your best to keep Sunny immobile as possible to prevent further injury. If you suspect Peji has a broken wing it would be best to take her to a vet in your area. They can take an X-ray to see if the wing is broken and can help create a cast or bandaging as needed to help it heal properly. Your vet can also recommend bird safe medications as needed if she is in pain or has other injuries.

You need to take your bird into a vet immediately to get checked out. There could be internal injuries from the bite, and the vet can treat her to prevent any infection from the bite. Please take her into a vet right away. Best of luck.

Thanks for reaching out about this little bird. Often cat attacks are fatal for birds, as there are some pretty bad bacteria in the mouths and claws of cats. If this little bird is still in your possession, I would recommend contacting a wildlife rehabber in your area to see if they would be able to treat it with antibiotics and then rehabilitate it while its feathers grow back. Without its feathers, it makes it very difficult for birds to keep warm, even in warmer climates. If some of the tail feathers are missing, it can make it difficult for them to fly appropriately as well. To find wildlife rehabilitators in your area, you can search the NWRA website or the California wildlife rehabilitators group as well. Additionally, you may be able to contact a veterinarian who is comfortable seeing birds as they may have contacts for wildlife rehabilitators in the area as well. Hello! I'm sorry to hear about Mithwing's accident. Cats can be very dangerous to parrots, and I'm sure it was a scary situation. Be very sure that she doesn't have any puncture wounds on her body as cat saliva contains a lot of bacteria that can be toxic to birds. While it is possible that Mithwing is just very stressed from the incident, she could also have some internal injuries that you can't see. If she does not eat or return to acting like her normal self within the next 12 hours, I strongly suggest that you bring her to a veterinarian immediately. She may need an x-ray to see if she has any broken bones (broken ribs are common and can be very painful) or internal bleeding.
