Why are my peachface bird chicks dying after hatching? What's wrong?

It would be hard to tell what caused the babies to die without a necropsy/examination. It's possible there was a genetic issue, an illness, or the babies were just weak/not fed as well and so passed on. Your parents are a bit young still and may be having trouble caring for all the babies, so helping out by supplementing with baby bird food may be best to help the remaining babies thrive.

You can clean out the nesting box as needed. Gently scoop the chicks out and place them in a clean temporary box. Expect mom to complain and peck. Scrape the box and fill with clean nesting material. Return the chicks to the box afterwards. If the hen is not feeding them adequately, you will need to supplement​ them or pull them for handraising. Use a commercial handfeeding formula. Follow label directions. If you don't have experience hand feeding, ask your avian veterinarian or an experienced breeder. If this is Boo Boo's first clutch, the loss of some of the chicks may be due to inexperience.

You should have the chicks or parents examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet. A culture may identify bacteria. If you are hand feeding, use fresh food for each clutch. Clean and sanitize all equipment between feedings or clutches. Clean and sanitize all cages, bowls, toys nest boxes and perches. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Change cage paper daily. Make sure the chicks are kept warm and are emptying their crops regularly. Sour crop, or crop stasis, can result in a hard crop full of spoiled food and bacteria or fungi. I hate to hear about the passing of the baby birds. Even though they aren't true 'pets' it's so enjoyable to watch them grow. Most likely the chicks passed away due to parasites, an infection or an malnutrition. Mother nature is tough and it's true that only the strongest survive. That is a lot of questions! And one I don't really have a good answer to. Sudden death can be caused by a number of things including illness, parasites, infections, nutritional issues, etc. It's always a good idea to first make sure the environment your birds are in is kept clean, and that they have access to a balanced diet and fresh water at all times. It is also a good idea to quarantine any new birds for a few days before introducing them to the other birds you own in order to prevent the spread of any illness. Stress from being put with strange birds, recently re-homed, switched to a new cage, etc can also cause a bird to act ill. Making sure they are in an environment that is free from harassment by other pets or people, is in a warm-draft free area, and that all birds can easily access food, water, perches and sleeping space is best. If you suspect one or more birds are ill it is best to separate them immediately into a hospital cage that is kept warm and with easy access to food and water to prevent the spread of illness and to keep any sick birds from being picked on. Seeking veterinary care to check for the cause of their illness is also a good idea.

Thanks for your question about Blue, and thanks for the pictures. She is a beautiful bird. From your description, and from the photos, I would be concerned that Blue isn't feeling well. She looks to be thin in the photos - the way we look at body condition in a bird is by the breast, and I can see that her keel bone appears to be more prominent in the photos. This, along with the abnormal vocalizations that you are hearing, may indicate that she is sick. I would ensure that her environment is free of stress due to her having her chicks, as an increase in stress can lead to illness. If she is stressed, she may also not eat as much food as she needs as well. I would recommend that she is evaluated by a veterinarian, if possible - depending on what they find on examination, they may recommend diagnostic testing such as radiographs or systemic blood work. They can also offer potential treatment options for her as well. To decrease stress at home, please ensure that she is in a quiet and warm place with no drafts, loud noises, or unfamiliar objects/people/animals. Thanks for reaching out, but am sorry for your loss. There are lots of possibilities, but a non-avian veterinarian would have been a better choice than breeders. Coccidiosis would have resulted in diarrhea. Unfortunately only a necropsy can give definitive answers. Bacterial or viral infections, metabolic disorders such as liver or kidney problems, toxicities are only a few possibilities. Good luck.
