Why are my young budgie babies dying? Parents are only 8 months old.

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female

Budgie laid 6 eggs. All 6 hatched. On 2nd May, one 7 days old baby died and on 4th May, one 11 days old baby died. They were the youngest. All others had feathers and eyes open but two who died didn't. Why did this happened? They died on alternate days. I heard that the weak ones die and the strongest ones live. Is that true? I really need your help. I don't want any more babies to die. Also my pair is 8 months old. Please help ASAP. Thanks.

It would be hard to tell what caused the babies to die without a necropsy/examination. It's possible there was a genetic issue, an illness, or the babies were just weak/not fed as well and so passed on. Your parents are a bit young still and may be having trouble caring for all the babies, so helping out by supplementing with baby bird food may be best to help the remaining babies thrive.

There are many reasons why one of the babies might have passed including inappropriate development, malnutrition or
Infectious disease. In case of the latter, you should clean the nest box with a dilute antiseptic solution and get the remaining babies (and mom and dad) to the veterinarian in case they too are ill and need treatment.

I am so sorry to hear that some of the babies died. It is true though that the weakest of the clutch may pass and as difficult as that is, it is nature's way of ensuring that only strong babies will survive to pass on their genetics to their babies. Try to keep the nest box clean and ensure that the pair are feeding the other babies well. Good luck and feel free to post any additional questions you may have.

Why did my budgie chicks die in the nest box? Heat, feeding, or smell?

You can clean out the nesting box as needed. Gently scoop the chicks out and place them in a clean temporary box. Expect mom to complain and peck. Scrape the box and fill with clean nesting material. Return the chicks to the box afterwards. If the hen is not feeding them adequately, you will need to supplement them or pull them for handraising. Use a commercial handfeeding formula. Follow label directions. If you don't have experience hand feeding, ask your avian veterinarian or an experienced breeder. If this is Boo Boo's first clutch, the loss of some of the chicks may be due to inexperience.

My mama budgie stopped feeding 26-day-old babies. Is this normal?

26 days is old enough that the babies should be starting to explore and eat some on their own. If only dad is feeding them he may be trying to encourage them to leave the nest and find food on their own. Making sure they have access to bird feed near where they can get to may help get them used to eating on their own and exploring some.

If your entire flock is experiencing illness and then death, it would be best to seek veterinary care in person ASAP to try and find the underlying cause and provide treatment. It would be best to remove any sick or sick looking birds from the flock and move them to isolated hospital cages to avoid spreading illness or disease among the remaining healthy birds and losing the rest of the flock. Once the underlying cause is found, you can then take measures to both treat and preventively avoid further illness.

What do budgie parents feed their newly hatched baby chicks?

Budgies will typically eat a portion of their own food, and then regurgitate it to the babies so it can be more easily digested by them. If the parents aren't feeding the babies, there are commercial baby bird foods available that when added to water, mix up into a slurry that is easy for the baby bird to digest (since we can't regurgitate to them!). As the babies grow and start to explore on their own, they will begin to eat the regular adult food as well.

My budgie had babies! How do I feed and care for my new budgies?

If your budgie's parents are still around they will most likely care for them on their own. However if the parents aren't around or aren't caring for the babies properly, you will need to start feeding them yourself. Most pet stores will carry a basic baby bird food which has feeding instructions depending on your bird's age. You'll also need a syringe with which to mix and feed the food. As your bird grows you can start introducing an adult balanced diet to encourage them to begin eating more solid foods.
