My parrot has stomach issues. Should I give vet-prescribed drops?

Unfortunately a medication can't be prescribed without an exam in person, and without knowing the cause of the vomiting and diarrhea. Parasites, nutritional issues, obstructions or problems with the GI tract, illness, etc can all be possible causes that all require different treatments. It would be best to bring the baby bird to a vet ASAP, especially if they are dehydrated or unable to keep food down, so that the cause can be found and treatment started.

An antibiotic will only be helpful if there is a bacterial infection causing his problem. It is best to schedule a vet visit first to try and find the underlying issue causing the feather loss and changes to his stool. Additional causes can include internal parasites, illness, nutritional issues, viral infections, bacterial infections, yeast and fungus on the skin, or even arthritis in older birds preventing them from properly cleaning themselves. Ruling out these issues, or treating any that are found, are best to get Blu feeling better.

Thanks for your question about Sara, and thanks for the photos as well. I would agree that the droppings do not appear normal. The feces look to be very dark, and there is extra urine present. If Sara's feces are typically dark, this can be related to diet, but when we see dark feces in birds, we become concerned that it may be digested blood (called melena). The increase in urine may occur if she was drinking a lot, but we also become concerned about stress and how the kidneys are working. This, combined with the vomiting would make me concerned that Sara is sick. Even though the signs have cleared, I would recommend having Sara evaluated by a veterinarian. The medication that you are giving currently is a vitamin supplement, but if there is something more serious going on, it will not be sufficient to treat it. Depending on what your veterinarian finds on examination, they may recommend evaluating a sample of the feces to see whether there is blood in it or not, and may recommend a blood test to evaluate the kidneys. Thanks for reaching out about Bluey and including photos. The cause of the regurgitation needs to be discovered. Primary reasons that are likely are heavy metal toxicity, ingested foreign bodies, mega-bacteria and more. A veterinary visit for radiographs and blood work is recommended. Heavy metal should show up well on radiographs. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some aid. Good luck.

Anti-emetic (anti-vomiting) medications can be given by injection, so might reduce/stop regurgitation, that can then allow oral medications to be given. Subcutaneous fluids might have to be given to maintain hydration. Were follow up radiographs taken after the initial ones? A gastrointestinal foreign body must still be considered. Good luck.

Unfortunately for legal reasons, we are unable to prescribe medications over the internet without having examined a bird in person. You will need to try and find a vet in your area that can examine Sokar in order to prescribe the medication and give dosing information.

I do not recommend giving them mediations unless they are sick. Giving birds antibiotics to prevent illness can cause vomiting and diarrhea which can be fatal. I recommend keeping the cage clean and proper diet with water. If they become ill you can always take them to a vet for better advice.
