My parakeet has stomach issues and vomiting. Do probiotics help?

A radiographs at any veterinary clinics should be able to determine easily. The prognosis is good with treatment. Apple cider vinegar might help with a decrease of bacteria in the water but is not a treatment for an intestinal infection. Other causes include metabolic disorders (liver, kidney), infections, toxicities, viral or fungal diseases and more. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some aid but is not a treatment. Good luck.

Thanks for including the picture of Kiwi. It seems like Kiwi is regurgitating. Parrots can regurgitated for multiple reasons: food sharing, stress, eating something noxious, ingestion of something toxic or due to infectious or metabolic illness (kidney, liver, etc.). With food sharing, they rarely shake their head and spray it everywhere. One of the other more common causes is eating items with lead or zinc, two soft metals, that affect the vomit center to cause the regurgitation. You'll have to investigate the environment and search for anything Kiwi might be chewing on. If you think that is the case, a visit to the veterinarian should provide a means of confirmation (radiographs) and then the treatment has a fairly good prognosis as long as it is caught fairly early. Providing heat support for an environment around 85-90 degrees will help to stimulate his immune system. But if he continues to regurgitate or become lethargic or anorectic, you need to visit your local avian veterinarian.

Regurgitation can be caused by many thing such as ingestion of foreign material (plastic, fabric, wood, etc), toxic ingestion (lead, zinc,plants), metabolic disorders (liver, kidney), infections and several viral diseases. Each of these have different means of diagnosis and possible treatments, therefore a veterinary visit is recommended. Chronic regurgitation can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, malnutrition, and more, making a veterinary visit even more expedient. Try offering small amounts of food and water, more frequently to decrease possibility of regurgitation. Good luck.

Anti-emetic (anti-vomiting) medications can be given by injection, so might reduce/stop regurgitation, that can then allow oral medications to be given. Subcutaneous fluids might have to be given to maintain hydration. Were follow up radiographs taken after the initial ones? A gastrointestinal foreign body must still be considered. Good luck.

Thanks for your question about Sara, and thanks for the photos as well. I would agree that the droppings do not appear normal. The feces look to be very dark, and there is extra urine present. If Sara's feces are typically dark, this can be related to diet, but when we see dark feces in birds, we become concerned that it may be digested blood (called melena). The increase in urine may occur if she was drinking a lot, but we also become concerned about stress and how the kidneys are working. This, combined with the vomiting would make me concerned that Sara is sick. Even though the signs have cleared, I would recommend having Sara evaluated by a veterinarian. The medication that you are giving currently is a vitamin supplement, but if there is something more serious going on, it will not be sufficient to treat it. Depending on what your veterinarian finds on examination, they may recommend evaluating a sample of the feces to see whether there is blood in it or not, and may recommend a blood test to evaluate the kidneys.
